Have you ever wanted to get an MP3 of the audio in a YouTube video, without having the horrid sound quality of putting a recorder up to the speaker? Well, it IS possible! And you can do it free, easily, and well.

Step 1: If you don't already have it, get the Firefox web browser here
Step 2: At the Firefox website go to addons and search "mp3 YouTube". There will be an add-on that says "MP3 to YouTube".
Step 3: Click on it, to learn about it, and than add it.
Step 4: Go to a YouTube video.
Step 5: If the add-on is added succesifully, you'll see two links for MP3's. Click the one you like, and BOOM! you can do this!

Oh, and steps 2-5, need to be done in Firefox.

That is a cool trick and it could be very handy. But Sunrise-Moon has a good point too - a lot of the material on Youtube is owned by people that would like to be paid for their creations. This is particularly true of many musicians. If you download copyrighted music using this technique you could be pirating, which is illegal.

A legal approach that works very well also, is to go to Amazon.com, then go to their MP3 download area and pay 0.99 for the song. This method does require a credit card and does assume that the artist is selling though Amazon.

You can then sleep well at night knowing that you have helped support the artists that you admire so that they will be inclined to create more great music smile

You could use it for piracy.

But, you can also use it for a lot of good. Just only download legal things.

Well... If it's up there in an official video, than it's online. You don't have to pay to see the video... So if they're doing that, than you might feel ethically right to download... From the official video... hmm

They put it up there so they can draw you to the song, and then they expect to make a sale on the song from that. Notice that most "official" videos have a download link, and the link goes to iTunes, and the iTunes download is payed...

And of course, there is Media Converter, which in my opinion is BY FAR the best. The only problem is, the servers do tend to get overloaded.

According to Media Converter, taking music from videos is in the grey area of the law. It's not illegal, but it isn't exactly legal either.

It depends on what you are comfortable with. Personally, I don't like to full songs from videos, unless the video is intended to be used. When I convert video to mp3, I usually only take small clips of the song for use in videos and such.

I just mess around with my audio inputs and record it in Audacity.

If I feel like making it better quality, I'll add &fmt=18 to the end of the video and record it in Stereo.

I have Cycling Soundflower, which allows you to make it so that sound from the speakers is "directed" into the internal microphone built into my computer. I then edit and cut the audio clip a bit. This means that the music and sound that I record has no loss in quality, and sounds exactly as it did from the video/audio clip that was on the internet ^_^.

All you need is Realplayer, this isn't rocket science
Any browser, and it has a built in converter. Also, no messed up firefox code
