Re: Is Befriending someone Totally Safe?

I'd think it would be. Friending someone doesn't really do anything other than add them to your list and show their projects on the "Friends' latest Projects" section on the front page, and it doesn't give out personal info or anything.

It's safe. All it does is add them to your friend's list. They don't see any of your personal information or anything. This site was designed by MIT for all ages.

Friending someone within Scratch is perfectly safe, but finding them on other locations (say, Skype or Facebook) might not be. Just be cautious!

Hey HotCocoa28, as with any website with a social aspect, friending somebody you don't know and talking to somebody you don't know over the internet can be a tricky issue.

Typically, the Scratch website was designed for users of various ages and various backgrounds; us moderators and the administrators (Scratch Team) do our best to try and keep this website safe and friendly for all. At most, the only personal info that is displayed publicly on the website is country and city (which will only show for certain Scratchers above a certain age), and even this can typically blanked out if you don't want it to be revealed. Sharing of personal info (such as e-mail, or giving out names or specific locations, for example), is discouraged and, if put on the website, is usually removed.

As others have said before, this friends list is connected with your personal "My Friend's Latest Projects" channel on the front page - it shows only the Scratch projects made by those on your friends list. No personal info is given out to anybody if you add somebody to your friend list.

Additionally, you can also access an Ignore List (found on your user page) to add people who you do not want commenting on your projects or galleries. Should you come across somebody who is making comments that make you feel uncomfortable, you can add them to your ignore list and they will be blocked from speaking to you on the main website.

As with any form of communication over the internet, it is best to be careful about what you say over the internet; in other words, be cautious and don't give out any information you are not comfortable with other people knowing.

Here is the Contact Info for the Scratch Team should you have any other technical issues about the website (or you can always reply back here and one of us mods can get one of the Scratch Team members to reply).  wink
