MidnightLeopard for community moderator!

Hello Scratch, my name is Connor. I am 13 years old. The year was 2007, I was 9 years old and in fourth grade. A graduate from MIT had brought Scratch into our school and taught it to us one day. This was back in the 1.0 days, when there was a button to conjure a cat sprite. I immediately got sucked into scratch, I had been wanting to create video games all my life. All the kids in my class got bored of it instantly, while I am writing this today.

I started out making some silly games, and getting used to the program. My parents didn't let me go on line at the time, but after I begged an begged, they let me have an account. Once I got my account, I began to download projects and learn from them. I really understood what scratch was all about! Collaborative learning of course!

In 2008 I believe it was, I went to the Scratch User Meet-up at the media lab. Forget Disney World, the Media Lab is the coolest place in the world! I've been to every Scratch Day at MIT so far and the 2010 Scratch Conference.

Since then I have always been making games on Scratch in my free time and didn't and never will get sick of it. I have been teaching game programming classes at my new school and have taught scratch to my classmates. I have also been teaching my friends and my two brothers, elephant1, 8, and EmperorEvil, 11.

In 2010, I was found by an organization called Build-It-Yourself and I got to be an intern. There I have been creating inventive ways to make scratch robots and skill-measuring games.

I believe I should be a Scratch Community Moderator because I am EXTREMELY dedicated, I would ALWAYS lend a helping hand, I would NEVER violate the Terms Of Use. If being a Moderator has anything to do with helping Scratch, I'm up for it!

I am on the scratch site all the time, I would say a few times a day. Of course I would ban those annoying spambots when they're reported, I will edit posts with terms of use violations in them, but I won't make it look ugly (i.e This is very [removed by mods]) I would simply change it's wording in a nicer way perhaps. I would always be nice of course. I would be the moderator you can be friends with! So in total,

1. I won't bother people by editing posts.
2. I will stop spam.
3. I'm a good guy!
4. I have been scratching for almost four years.
5. The organization I work for is near the media lab, so we're sort of in the same league.
6. I have met the Scratch Team 6 Times and I might be meeting John Maloney soon.
7. I have had a bit of a dark past in terms of violations, but I have been good and helpful.
8. I have been planning my campain for a few months, so I have been acting like a mod a bit.
9. I get along great with all users.
10. I like diversity in projects, and on the front page!
11. I have LOTS of experience so I can always help!

Scratch has turned me from 9 year old dreamer to 13 year old inventor. There is no way to document how much I want to thank the Scratch Team and there isn't anything I won't do to help you.

Sincerely,

MidnightLeopard

Find someone post count. Click posts under username. Find number of pages. Times that by 40 for min and 60 for max and you have a rough estimate of post count.

And also, I'm not convinced that you would be active. I've never seen you make a post in the miscellaneous section, or in fact anywhere in the forums in the past 4 or 5 months. Prove you'll be more active, but otherwise you seem like a solid candidate, and I might consider voting for you.

That changing posts thing is nice and all, but I wouldn't want that happening to any of my posts. Neither would anyone else.

Thanks [name removed]! It's because I went to the conference for three days. It'd be great if we both win! We would do well together

It's only going to the Scratch conference and stuff. No biggy. Knowing all about Scratch like midnightleopard does is maybe 50% of the requirement in my perspective - the rest is moderating skills and maturity and stuff. So we're both pretty good in that too.

Whoever said posting in Miscellaneous was a requirement to being a mod?  tongue  There are other ways of being active in the forums without even posting anything - for normal Scratchers, it's quite possible to simply browse Miscellaneous (or any other section of the forums, for that matter) and report things that may need a moderator's attention.  wink

pardon me if I am bothering you, but as a moderator: What did you think of my speech?

Well, whenever I analyze moderator candidates, I look at two things: their past actions and posts, as well as the crux of their speech that talks about how they claim to improve the forums.

In your speech, the crux is this:

I am on the scratch site all the time, I would say a few times a day. Of course I would ban those annoying spambots when they're reported, I will edit posts with terms of use violations in them, but I won't make it look ugly (i.e This is very [removed by mods]) I would simply change it's wording in a nicer way perhaps. I would always be nice of course. I would be the moderator you can be friends with!

Now for my interview-the-candidates question (I think I'll do one for every speech made  tongue ):
Everyone knows that when moderators edit posts, they usually remove the offending section with the phrase [removed by moderator], [removed] or something similar, and may either leave a public moderator edit note, or ask the Scratch Team to assess the situation should it be an issue where a private notification may have to be sent. The edits are usually public (along with the moderator's name, to show which moderator edited the post), which otherwise indicates that it is clear that such content is unwanted on the website.

Your speech says that you would make the edit "less ugly" and the wording more nicer. How do you propose to remove offensive content so it is less ugly and more nice, yet still being clear that the removed content is unwanted on the website?

Lucario's real name, you changed it to 'name removed.' I would just change it to his username, that way it would look less ugly.

see? And maybe leave a post below stating that I edited the name out, to show people that the removed content was unwanted. Thanks for your input.

Usually, edits are there on purpose to show what was removed (and maybe a reason why), and I will admit that was a rather hasty edit on my part.

You know, that was pretty good answer. Any other examples you would like to share with us on how you would prove to be a good moderator?  smile
