First, you go to to stage, then click the backgrounds tab, then click import. Then you can scroll around your pictures and add them to your project.

Press the "import" button in the paint editor and navigate to the folder, find your image, and press "OK."

That button that coolstuff mentioned is towards the top on the left side.

Do you see the Import button? Click it to open an image from file and add it to the Canvas.
