I had a different idea for locking projects.
You can have a button to lock projects under your project download link.
When you click it, you are brought to a form where you have to tell the Scratch Team why you want to lock it.
Before the project is locked, the Scratch Team reviews your reason and the project.
If they agree with your reason, they should prevent any future downloads.
On your project, there should be an "Unlock Project Downloads" under that text. I just forgot to do it when creating the images.

I think this is not a good idea because Scratch is about learning to program and also showing you the steps, and locking downloads stops that so I would have to disagree.

To my understanding, the point of allowing projects to be downloaded is to allow Scratchers to analyze code in order to have a better understanding of how the project works.
Locking the project will indeed prevent users from figuring out answers/codes/cheats, etc., but it does so at the expense of preventing others from figuring out how a project is created, and thus going against Scratch ideas. I'd imagine this to be the same with most reasons for locking downloads in general, so I would have to disagree with the idea here.

I don't like the idea of stopping downloadability. It probably won't happen though.

I have a feeling no one looked at my idea and just said no.

I did read everything but I feel that everyone should be able to download any project and that's the reson why they don't lock from downloading project's.

I feel this does not quite bring across the "with a different idea" part of the title, besides that each and every request must be approved by the Scratch Team.
While it would be nice to be able to prevent stray eyes from seeing what is not meant to be seen, the idea goes against the main ideas of Scratch and would cut into time better spent doing other things.

Nice 3d imagry. I love this idea. I support. But also, there should be a "request download" button so people can click, and you get a notification. If you get lets say 50 clicks, it will auto unlock.

That might be true

Scratch is supposed to be open source - while the locking of downloads is very cautious, I still think it's not a very good idea. ^_^

I thought it was a good idea, but after looking at the other posts I thought "no, they're right". But good idea! Sometimes good ideas just don't work out.

Despite the reason and all that, I still don't like this idea - it's way too restricted, half the people would lock their projects, and goes against remixing.

No one is reading my idea. I can tell. You're just clicking the thread and saying "NO".

I read it... But I still don't like this idea because of the above reasons. I kind of half like it, because you wouldn't necisarily be able to lock them.
Honestly, when I sew this, I though: Uugh. I wonder what could possibly be different about this...
So that lead me to actually read the topic post!

Wait... That would mean you can't use the microphone or picoboard for viewing other peoples project's because it doesn't work online if the downloads would be locked. I am disagreeing because one of my best project's use the mic/picoboard.

Sorry for the bump, but I remember somewhere in 08-09, I posted a reply to the same idea.
On-Topic:
When the project is locked, people can still download the project, but they cannot do the following things:
------------
Edit scripts
Re-publish project
Edit images or anything else.
------------
The user can still save the project, however. But the desc and creator cannot be changed.

This suggestion is a bad idea. Number one -- there were several topics with the same idea, and they were all closed with one of the moderators having a good point. Number two -- the Scratch Team encourages remixing. Number three -- people would start doing this all the time, and new Scratchers would quit because they wouldn't have any projects to build on top of (look at number two). Number four -- with quizzes, people that don't know the answers will be stuck scratching their heads. Number five -- the file is still going to be on the server, so someone can just easily append "/download" to the end of the project URL to download it. I think I've just made my point.

Like previous discussions, this probably won't happen very soon because it's against the motto of Scratch. But I'm surprised you made such a good mockup! I'm definitely persuaded by it more . Though what might work, with Scratch 2.0 is changing it so you can download a project, but once doing so, you can't upload that project.

Well, it wouldn't do that in Scratch 2.0

So the mic and picoboard work online for 2.0?

Ah, but that could change. What about my idea with my post above, as being able to download the project, but not re-upload the project?
