I think they did that in the past Silent Hill games, too (Even though I've never played them, since M rated games freak me out)

Lot's of games do this now, using a learning AI to better enhance game experience. It's really one of the coolest techniques out there. (I've mess around with something similar in Python, it was quite fun).
