My pet bird is sick :(

THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED!!!!

Recently, my bird got sick for some reason. She plucked her feathers more than she used to, she's losing weight, and she lost her appetite. I looked in my lovebird care book, and it seems to me that she might have Giardia. Giardia is a curable disease that affects mostly parrot species, like lovebirds. I also read that Giardia is caused by a protozoan called Giardia psittaci. And by looking at the symptoms, I think she might have it. We are giving her water with bird medication in it to help her, but I still have one question: What else can I do for her? We don't take her to the vet much (My parents say it's "Too expensive", but I don't believe them), so is there anything else that I can do to help my bird?

Try this: http://www.exoticpetvet.net/avian/giardia.html

It looks like it has some good info on treatment of Giardia in parrots (most notably, keeping the materials in the cage clean to prevent it from recurring).

I looked at the webpage, and it seems that the symptoms pretty much match up. She has most of the symptoms, so I'm pretty sure that Princess Peach (My bird's name) came down with Giardia. The only problem is that my bird is acting like her normal hyper self, but that's a bad thing because it means that she's trying to hide her illness. Parrots in the wild hide the fact that they are sick so that they won't become food for a predator. Disease-hiding can be a real problem if it is in a pet bird. I'm still trying to convince my parents to take her to a vet.

Oh man. This is bad. :C
I might make a project about it, but I won't if you don't want me to.

What?

Icecream, the vet is more expensive than you think. It's hundreds of dollars

Your parents are mean.

The vet is a few hundred dollars, but you have a pet so you should expect that!

Re: My pet bird is sick :(

Sorry. i hope it gets better.

The vet isn't hundreds of dollars. It is more like $70-140, depending on the reason of the visit. (I know this. I have seen the bills from our cats' visits)

I imagine exotic birds are more costly to take care of than cats...

Re: My pet bird is sick :(

I hope your bird gets better.  smile  But since the vet is expensive, don't take her to the vet until you're absolutely positive that you can't cure her yourself and that you can't buy the medications without a prescription.

What is worth more:

A few hundred bucks?
Or a living thing?

Money isn't a living thing!

Your bird is.

So should you save a living thing? Or save a few hundred bucks?

I have a lot of arguments. Me and my mom scream at each other like every day, so I'm used to arguing.

Hope your parents show some sympathy and not be so cheap. I just hope that happens before your bird dies.

However, I don't think it's a good idea to keep a bird in your house in the first place.

Raise some money for your bird. Do a lemonade stand or bake sell or something like that. And if all of your ideas fail, go on the street with a cardboard sign, tear up your clothes, and go on the street.

However, you get the money, use it for a vet trip.

Please don't use 3-4 returns in between short couples of 1-2 sentences to signify short pauses. Just use commas, and if you really need to just use one or two (returns).

Re: My pet bird is sick :(

Okay, guys, to tell you the trith, my bird is NOT gonna die. Giardia is not a seroius disease, since it is curable, and I'm doing the best I can to help my bird get better, and I'm still trying to convince my parents to take my bird to a vet. Any ideas to convince them?

Oh yeah, and it's late, and I'm supposed to be asleep.

Act polite, do chores, be nice to siblings, and kindly ask them. (Otherwise known as being anti-rufflebee) Or, you could try earning your own money.. Just make sure they know that you care about your bird a lot, and that you want the best for her  big_smile

This doesn't work with my parents, but it might work with yours.

Annoy them into it.

Re: My pet bird is sick :(

I have a idea.

Go and steal enough money from your parent's wallets, and if you have a friend close enough to go to their house on bike, ask them if you can go there. If they say yes, get your bird, and go to the vet instead! Of course, this only works if the vet is within biking distance.

This will work until your parents notice they have less money then they remember. If you have a sibling, do the classic "They did it!" routine. It would help to have "proof".
