User Fans
How about if you added a system that allowed you to become a "fan" of a user? Not exactly a subscription, just a way of showing a user you appreciate their projects.
I'd definitely become a fan of Sunrise Moon and his wacky shaving game.

The friend list system does that already... doesn't it? 
There's a difference between liking a user and being their fan, but it seems close enough in my opinion. ^^

The friend list is sort of like a fan list - there isn't really any friend stuff, it's more of fan stuff. Just use the friend list feature.

Or we could get my suggestion more support so we can distinguish friends from fans.

Actually, this isn't a bad idea . It sounds similar to "liking" something on Facebook, and like a good way to show support for a user. I support!
@everyone else: He wants it to be more of publicly proclaiming you like something, not a subscription (though that could come with it, I guess).
