Moderator summary:
NetScratch, a deviation of Scratch that allow variables to be shared across computers through the internet which was released in beta several years ago, will most likely not be coming anytime soon. In lieu of this, Scratch 2.0, to be released in 2011, will most likely have similar capabilities.
Excuse me, but when is netscratch coming out (if u don't know 100% can u give me a rough estimate)
thanks in advance

No idea, hopefully around the same time that 1.3 is. I had the image file on my computer, but it crashed and Tammy Stern no longer has a link to it on her site. The only question is, when WILL 1.3 come out?

Notice how nobody from the Scratch team is answering. Maybe they scrapped the idea. Not to rain on your parade (I can't wait for it either, even though the beta freezes up half the time ).

NetScratch was just an experimental version of Scratch. The next version of Scratch coming out this summer 2008 will not have any of NetScratch's features. There are no plans to release any of the features in NetScratch in the future.

So netscratch isn't coming? or are we all just unsure?

I think it's 40-60 chance right now. ||| 60 % Netscratch ||| 40 % Not Netcratch

I can imagine one team of developers trying to make a version of scratch that connects to a server. Wouldn't it cost extra money to run the multiple servers needed? Also not many other game making programs like this connect to other people playing online. To do that sort of thing you need a very generic coding, like java or flash.

You need more than a good language to make online multiplayer apps. You will need a good server running all the time for the game. It takes effort and money to acquire and manage computers that run these servers. That is why usually only professionals develop these kinds of apps.

Hi, all.
It's great that there is so much interest in NetScratch. NetScratch was a cool experiment but, as someone pointed out, there are many technical issues around scaling something like that up so that thousands of people can use it at once. We have no plans to release NetScratch. In fact, the webpage about NetScratch was not even meant to be public; that was an accident.
However, we are still experimenting with some of the ideas that came out of NetScratch. Those ideas will not be in Scratch 1.3, but we'll keep working on them and they may appear in some future version of Scratch.
Stay tuned, and keep on Scratching!

NetScratch is a great idea, I mean I don't want MIT to give up! But to make it, there is a big requirement that they will need: A VERY large server. I mean I have an iTouch with many apps that run on wifi servers and are reletively fast. If NetScratch is going to be made, the most Scratch can do is make it simple. Making NetScratch blocks would take FOREVER! Costimizable wifi for thousands of defirent projects? That could crash the Scratch server. And if they make NetScratch, I doubt it will be as easy as <if> WiFi level = 3 <broadcast[ You are now online....

Scratch 1.4's features are the same as netscratch's.
Except with 1.4, you have to host your own servers.

Not really. It's called a mesh. I had one of those XO's from OLPC. It had the same idea. It's a small network that computers can join. Servers have a different idea.
