No. These days, the main characters never die. There's no extreme emotion...![]()
In most of the books I read (Which are not from "these days"), at least one main character dies by the end. It happens in newer books, too. I just feel like the author does that when they run out of ideas.
And, anyway, if you kill the two main characters, who's the book going to be about from then on?"I think in order to be a classic, there has to be an animal and someone has to die at the end."-Greg Heffley
(Not perfectly quoted)
I think it was something like "It has to be at least fifty years old, and someone has to die at the end." I dunno, I now feel inclined to go find that quote. So I'll go do that

I would feel let down by the author, in that they can't think of a more creative solution to a problem.
Oh, believe me. It's creative.
And I'll tell you a bit more about it. It's an action adventure sci-fi type book. And Peter (the younger main character) kills Jeff (the older main character).

He died?!?!
I haven't read any of the books or watched any of the movies. So I know next to nothing about it.

One main character kills the other? That's tragic. I don't think I could get through the book without crying.

He does it when he's under mind control. He doesn't want to kill Jeff, but he can't stop himself.

I'd say that lessens it a tiny bit.
But still, I'd be crying.

I can't just stop reading a story in the middle! Unless, of course, it's boring. Or too hard to read.

Stop telling me so much about it!!! I want to read your book, not explore the Miscellaneous and end up finding every detail.

Not permanately.
It was like his mother protecting him with love, except Harry came back when he protected his friends with it.

I'm sorry. I'll try not to give away any more important details.

I'd say it would be fine if you actually have a good reason for killing him. I don't like books where it seems like a character just randomly dies. His death has to have some sort of purpose.
Um... Well, it doesn't really have a purpose. I just want to kill him.

Unless of course I'll have to pay. In that case, explain the whole thing to me.

He shoots him with an alien gun which turns Jeff into sand.
(He's under mind control.)
