Improving the Friends List system on Scratch

Currently, Scratchers can add other Scratchers to their friends list. It makes sense to add somebody to the friends list if you consider someone as a friend, but adding them to the friends list has also become a way to "watch" other users (that is, seeing their projects on the front page of your personalized "My Friends' Latest Projects" channel), even if that user you may not consider as a friend.

DeviantART has a way to distinguish who you consider as a friend and who you simply "watch". In the image below, you can see that there is a way to check off whether or not you consider the other person a friend, but still keep an eye out for their artistic creations (unchecking the button means you don't consider them a friend, but you can still get notices when that person uploads something new to dA).
http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm47 … List-1.jpg

Why not have something similar for Scratch?

[P.S. The above people are very good, if you're on dA, give them a watch  tongue ]

EDIT:
coolstuff suggested expanding the options of the friends list, in which users are given the options to keep friends but, at the same time, not necessarily watch them (see here).

http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm47 … e/List.jpg

So now the current suggestion is to have the friends list similar to dA's current Friend's List system, with options to watch people (but not add them add friends), and add people as friends, (but not necessarily watch them).  smile

EDIT: I now have a suggestions page, see herebig_smile

EDIT: Here's a mockup of how such a system could be inplemented in Scratch

I agree that there needs to be a difference between "friends" and "watching". Do you guys have ideas of how this could be integrated into the current Scratch site? I'm thinking of adding this type of system to the Clutter site.

I would encourage you to make mock-ups. Show what the user would click to add as a user as friend or just watch. Are there other types of options that should be added?

Mock-up time!  big_smile

Given the current Scratch friend system, I was thinking that the best way to integrate a friend/watch system could be to have two lists (one friend list, one watch list), with options on the user's pages add to friend list or add to watch list (or both!). [NOTE: The changes are boxed in red]:
http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm47 … ockUp1.png

This can be integrated into the front page like this, with friend channel being eliminated and replaced with a channel comprising of only projects of Scratchers that a user watches. [NOTE: The changes are boxed in red]:

I was considering that, but I thought I'd pitch the idea here first. If it gets strong support, then I'll post it on the suggestions site.  smile

Re: Improving the Friends List system on Scratch

I personally agree with this idea because a "Friend" isn't someone who adds you with no sense of approval. So it'll be a great way to almost organise and mainly catagorize the scratch buddies system.

I like the idea, and I hope others can see it the same way.  smile

It might hurt some people's feelings though - because once there would be this update, I might make some people not-friend, so it might make them feel bad  hmm

I don't think that will really occur my friend.  smile

When someone adds someone else as a friend (not just to "watch" them) they should understand that by pressing that button, they would think they would add him. It gets rid of spamming of adding friends. And, it makes it more a a teamwork sort of thing. Making the scratch website even more active and not just leading people to the forums all day.

It's a great idea in my opinion.

Re: Improving the Friends List system on Scratch

I totally agree - but there are a few other things to consider. I'm not sure how things work at DeviantArt, but in Scratch I usually add someone as a friend as a sign of friendship, but don't usually want to see their projects up in my friends' recent projects unless they're really good. So something as an option to make the user your friend but not to follow them would probably be more useful than following them and not making them your friend. Those details are probably best left unsaid to the rest of the community (like ignore lists) so that people don't get offended. Maybe a completely separate option to subscribe - and have their projects show up on the front page?

I believe dA has something like that, let me show you the whole options in the dA friends list, as this might be what you are referring to:

http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm470/nefermaatkare/List.jpg

Notice how I've added Anime-2000 to the friends list, but have her stuff (deviations, journals, etc.) unchecked (the user actually left her account and moved to another one, so I unchecked all her stuff from the list).

You're saying there should be an option to friend other users but not necessarily have their project appear in the channel on the front page, yes?

Oh! Isn't that neat  smile  I like the ability to determine exactly how your friends show up, and where they show up. I think this is a must for future revisions of ScratchR.

cheddargirl's suggestion is nice, but I agree with coolstuff - I think I'd rather have his suggestion.

Well, it would be nice to have them on the front page.  big_smile

Agreed. Although a separate subscription option could have its merits. I know that when someone adds me as a friend, I'm not sure if it's because they consider me a friend, or if they want to see my projects on their front page. And since sometimes people who friend me don't have any projects I'm interested in, I don't friend back. But then I don't know who's subscribed to me.

Aside from that, I think it would be cool if there was a way to make the system partially public, so that Scratchers can see who is watching who, in similarity to how it is on deviantART. I can't even begin to fathom how many amazing artists I see on dA just be seeing who is watching my favorite artist; I would imagine that implementing something similar would bring more exposure to Scratch projects.

Now we've got the ball rolling!  big_smile
