The current "About" page on Scratch says this:
About
Scratch is a programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art -- and share your creations on the web.
As young people create and share Scratch projects, they learn important mathematical and computational ideas, while also learning to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively.
The goals of Scratch, therefore, is to teach kids about programming. And I ask you: what relevance does adding a stickman with your head to a field of wheat have to programming? The obvious answer here is, there is no relevance.
Top Remixed was first created to show the most open-ended projects available. Ones that one could add upon and remix. Unfortunately, that was the Remixed that never was. Less than a week after the row on the front page was created, projects such as "add yourself to a list!" started showing up on the front page. To keep Scratch down to its roots, I ask that that section be removed from the front page, or at least put below Top Loved and Top Viewed.
EDIT 26/08/2010: You can now vote for this on Scratch Suggestions! http://suggest.scratch.mit.edu/forums/6 … ?ref=title

Two thumbs up. I've been against it for ages, because it's a cheap way for kids to get front page'd, and splashing some color in a cat drawing doesn't teach them anything.

I agree. I think most people just find these projects annoying and distracting. Especially when it's just a coloring contest. I think that a lot of people do like these projects, however, so maybe we could just move it like you suggested, or make it still accessible somewhere other than the front page?

That makes sense. Maybe the full list could still be accessible, there just won't be a row on the front page.

I agree.. Keep it linked here instead of the front page
.
Although something would probably need to replace it.

I don't get why Top Downloaded was removed, and I really liked it... Maybe we could take that back? If not, we could have "Top Commented" or something...

Then the person who made the project could just spam it with comments. (Because currently, the owner's comments count as a comment.)

Good point
Maybe the owner's comments could no longer count towards the comment count? I always found that a bit unnerving, anyways.

Hasn't this been suggested before?

It's an old thread made by Pinochio. He also made one suggesting that they bring back Top Downloaded in another thread, so I think we can keep using this one which suggests both of the ideas together instead of bringing back 2 old ones.

I kind of agree with taking them off the front page.

That still wouldn't work because projects like this may keep getting frontpage since people comment many times. Also, a project with many comments doesn't mean it's good, anyway.

Top commented and top downloaded do not mean people actually thought the project was any good.
If there was a project that did not work, people would download it to see if it worked downloaded, then comment that it did not work, and it would get more comments and downloads than a normal project.

I think that, although there are a lot of things that don't work as well as they could do regarding top remixed, I believe that some projects that get on there encourage really good remixes - Maki-tak's "Level one", an easily remixable platformer has inspired creative remixes on a wide scale, from the simple adding of a level, to adding moving platforms, lives, more colours for different effects (eg - trampolines), and so much more!
If we could somehow encourage more remixes like this one, top remixed may regain its programming value. As andresmh suggested on that thread that Ace linked to (on the third page), with 20 or so people, a project can get on Top remixed - if a group of around that size teamed up to work on an easily remixable project that encourages programming, it would easily reach the front page and possibly inspire more remixes from the community. Who knows? Perhaps it would inspire remixable projects with similar values in the future

Top Commented is not a good idea. It's just like top viewed, except if someone had a test account and a different IP address to go on, they could get instant front page.

I never look at that section. Most of the time its "Add yourself to this dumb random animation of a dumb cat chasing a dumb mouse!" or "Click on the fill button, choose a random color and click upload to win a coloring prize!" I wish that Level 1 project will be a source of inspiration for everyone. Ah well, some stuff doesn't work as you want it to be. Like the Misc forum or the TBGs. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. If you want to make an animation and end up curing cancer, then why not?

For about a half a year now, I've liked the idea of bringing Surprise Projects back and replacing Top Remixed with it. I definitely support this!

I am not necessarily advocating for a "Top Commented" section, but I think an alternative to Top Remixed is a must. Thanks everyone for your support and continue to brainstorm alternatives!
