Why are Jpeg resolutions so bad? I'm working on a school project, and made a book cover in paint. I accidentally saved it as a Jpeg (I saved it and made it a PNG.) I re-opened it, and even the black-white borders were messed up. Why are they so bad?

The compression algorithm used for JPEG images is what is to blame here. The algorithm is based on the way the human eye sees colors in images, so it's good for things like photographs and most traditional artwork, but not for everything else.
