Scratch 2.0 will destroy our Scratch mods!

That title was there to get your attention. The point of this topic is actually the opposite of the title.
Once Scratch 2.0 comes out, many people may think that it will take over/destroy our Scratch mods. However, that is not nesecarily true.

the Scratch Wiki article on Scratch 2.0 wrote:

Scratch will require Adobe Flash Player 10 to work online, though a downloadable version will be available as well

This means that although Scratch 2.0 will be mainly online, a .image will still be avaliable.  big_smile
Hope that clears some things up.  smile

The glass is never half full nor half empty; it is twice as large as it needs to be.

Re: Scratch 2.0 will destroy our Scratch mods!

I don't know who thinks that 2.0 will destroy their Scratch mods, I thought the general understanding was that they'll still be around but they just won't get updates from 2.0.

There won't be any .image files. Its not squeak, you only get a swf file i exoect, so it WILL destroy the mods. But I jope they keep 1.4 sourse code up for download.

Yeah - they will. They still have 1.2 available. And even if they don't, you can get them from beginners.tk  big_smile

I agree. I made a protest against Flash Scratch post under suggestions.

seriously! does the mit language like to lag one language behind the future?

There's no way Scratch could be built in HTML5! Take a look at the lag in the experimental viewer, triple it, and you have an idea of what to expect from an HTML Scratch running on the newest hardware on a modern browser.

I believe it's more a compatibility issue than a speed one.

Re: Scratch 2.0 will destroy our Scratch mods!

Scratch 1.x will remain to be supported - and you can continue modifying 1.4 if you'd like. They will have the source code of 2.0 up for download, but obviously that won't be quite as easy because Flash costs a ton of money  smile

You're right, Javascript execution is getting faster every day. But it still doesn't compare to compiled AS3.

Re: Scratch 2.0 will destroy our Scratch mods!

We need to band together to make a mod better than anything Scratch Team could make. People can write code to make blocks, or edit Squeak in a block-based way, from mods. Slash has the ability to be run online. We can do it!

I hear that it works better on Macs. I can't say for sure, because I don't have one, but that's what I hear.

It won't completely kill your modifications, but you'll have to make them again for Scratch 2.0.  tongue

Re: Scratch 2.0 will destroy our Scratch mods!

And for those source code people... FLASH COSTS 600$! As long as they have a squeak option, we'll be fine.

bye 1.4, we all loved you. but we all outgrew the site. 2.0 is a welcome change.

WHAT?!?!?!?!?!

I just started working on dingo, my new mod, and now, I can't work on it off of 2.0!!!

And, let me guess. They're not going to have a squeak version.

Re: Scratch 2.0 will destroy our Scratch mods!

It will not destroy the mods.

You have a number of choices:

1: Continue using the 1.4 source.
2: Find a FREE Flash editor
3: Give me a cookie.
4: Don't make any more mods.

Yes, 3 and 4 are jokes, but 1 and 2 are serious.  big_smile

Re: Scratch 2.0 will destroy our Scratch mods!

Billybob-Mario had a great idea, band together to create a mod. Wait, I can just imagine the arguing over what to name it. If we be extremely organized, we might be able to pull it off/

There ARE free Flash editors, like FlashDevelop! (You can also get Flex Builder 3 free if you're a student).

Also, all of you can get Flash for $250 since you're probably all students. But 2.0 is probably being built with Flex (free), not Flash! I guess we'll see...

Actually, it turns out you can get the newest version of Flash Builder (née Flex) for free here! I had been using an older version!  big_smile
