Someone send us an email asking:
Thanks for the great program. I have downloaded the Scratch and I am enjoying. I cannot listen drum and note sound. Other sounds are OK. What is the problem?
Our response:
The drum and midi commands use the MIDI synthesizer of your sound card. Check your settings--there are sometimes separate settings for the MIDI volume. I could be turned down or muted. It is also possible that your sound card does not support MIDI. The Java player has a software synth so it should play the drum and note commands.
The user replied:
Thank you so much. Now I can listen drum sound. I have just turned on MIDI volume. It's very useful.

I could not hear drums also. I saw this and checked and had the SW Synth all the way down. I set it up and can now drum to my heart's content. Perhaps that hint could be in the info about that block?

I didn't know either but AddZero told me. If you are using windows (which is the only one I know how to fix) goto start, all programs, accessories, entertainment, volume control. Change the SW Synth if it is muted. If it is not, then I have no idea what the problem is.

When looking through files in scratch, scratch does not recognise zipped folders and shortcuts.
Just open the zipped folder and extract the files.

This doesn't work even when unzipped.

Maybe the sound file isn't the right type.

Hey chezthecoladragon, Scratch only accepts certain file sounds, and, unfortunately, MIDI files are not one of them.
The best way to get MIDI files into Scratch is to use a music file converter that will transform the MIDI file into another format that Scratch accepts (such as a WAV file).

I can hear them, but they are quiet sometimes.

Then turn up your MIDI volume.

Mostly, mp3 files work best. Maybe, you can try converting the file with some websites that allow conversions. Try searching Free Music Converters online; there will be helpful links. I hope this helps, and scratch on!

We're talking about MIDI notes in Scratch, not actual MIDI files.

Thank you Thank you Thank you! I haven't made any good scratch projects in a while, because the sound wasn't working I'll try this. Now all the ST has to do, is allow you to import MIDI files, and turn them into blocks
