Is there a way to...

Re: Is there a way to...

Probably, but copyright is a long expensive process that wouldn't be worth the effort. It might also be against Scratch's license as well.

Well, I've got my book published, and I want to make a game of it. I've also got ideas for sequels and prequels, but I haven't written those yet, and I don't want anyone to steal them. I'm also planning to make them into movies.

Re: Is there a way to...

yes you can copyright it. pretty easy infact.
the way to do it is just add 'Copyright (c) calebxy 2010' or whatever you want to appear as.
that makes your work copyrighted.
but then, who can prove that you were the first to actually copyright it?
for that, you need to go to
1. the coyright office
2. the post office and send yourself a copy of the story in a mail. dont open it and you have a sealed letter from yourself w/ a stamp and date which proves you made it before that date.

these two things take time (and money), but are essential for proving your copyright at court.

but i don't think anyone would be so mean to, and besides, Scratch has got the dates stored in the server. that might not be a very strong proof, but it's something.

by the way, i forgot to add, copyright is just useless unless you want to sell a scratch project. which you cannot.

correct me if i'm wrong  smile

Re: Is there a way to...

You can probably copyright the story behind your Scratch Project, but you can't copyright the project itself... I'm not sure about copyrighting the story. You may wish to contact the Scratch Team with this one.

Re: Is there a way to...

You can copyright a story for tons of money as long as no-one else has already used it and it is not very basic.
But you cannot copyright the actual scratch project because of fair use policy, and other scratch users can make projects under the fair use policy with the same story, but if it is copyrighted others could not take it and sell it.

For a story of a scratch project its not going to be worth it.

Re: Is there a way to...

OK then. But is there a really simple way of doing. Can I do what LS97 said? Just write 'Copyright (c) calebxy 2010'?

Just writing 'Copyright' on it doesn't make it copyrighted.  tongue  You have to go to the The copyright office.

Actually, just writing "Copyright" on it does make it copyrighted - it's just not a very reliable method because anybody can say they copyrighted anything. The Copyright office is a service that verifies that you really did make it, and keeps a record. (That's why mailing something to yourself saying you copyrighted is a good idea, because then the Post has a record that you copyrighted something.)

Oh, OK. That's good. So what exactly would I write to make just the story copyrighted?
