There should be a "random project" link on the main page that would go to a random project.

Yeah - there was a row on the fron page called Surprise Projects. Each day it would pick three random projects and put them up. It got removed because inappropriate projects could be displayed.
...
Where would the Random Project button go?

Actually, it would just pick 3 random projects every time you loaded the page
You can still find the Surprise Projects, to an extent, right here - and the fact that this feature is currently present really reduces the need for the feature, don't you think?

It's actually quite easily accessible by clicking on "see more" under the "My Friend's Latest Projects" channel. It leads straight to a project list page, and you can click on the "surprise!" button for a set of random projects.
But perhaps that feature should be a bit more emphasized.

Inappropriate projects can still get displayed on the front page- on the newest projects. Of course, they don't stay as long.
Maybe if the random projects were updated a little less often than newest, but not let a whole day pass? maybe like 2-3 hours? and if a project gets flagged (for a good reason) it refreshes the row.
