This isn't a half bad idea! I like it! But I think that a project from the top 10 should be still more likely to show up than a project whose rank is 10-20, and a project from the top 5 should stlil be more likely to show up than a project whose rank is 5-10. But it shouldn't be *too* much. After all, it is what the COMMUNITY is doing, so the odds are they're more likely viewing something that's higher on the list than lower on the list.
That's a nice idea. It is a little bit more complicated, but if it is feasible, I think it could be good.

I love this idea, and actually proposed it to some other ST members a while back. I hope you get more votes so we can revisit it! I'm a little concerned that the title isn't totally clear... How about: Make the "What the community is.." rows show 3 random projects from the top 10.

That's a good suggestion. Is there a way to change titles in the new Suggestions forum? I couldn't find a way, and I don't think I should start a new suggestion- I don't want to loose all of those votes. If you (or someone else in charge) has the power to change titles, can you?

Wow! This is an excellent idea! I made a plea for suggestions on how to fix the front page back in 2008, but I think my post was too long for most people to bother reading it. Some of the issues I addressed back in 2008 are no longer of any use (e.g, projects getting on both lists), but for the most part it's still a very relevant post. It may be a good read if you have the time.
Anyways, I like your solution. I can see very few issues, and they're only very small nitpicks that I try to come up with: they're irrelevant.

i disagree, i mean it is a good idea, because the 'famous' scratchers are always dominating the front page, thus making it hard for us to get on, but that basically takes out the pride of being in the top three. if people saw that it was no longer the top three projects, each one on the front page would get MUCH less views, and in the bottom of the top 20, there are projects with maybe 2 remixes, or 20 views, which are probably lazy projects undeserving of the front page. i like it the way it is. if just anybody could get on the front page, there would be no more pride in...being on the front page! i'm sure there would be other ways to counter the 'famous' scratchers. maybe if the scratch team made it so you can not be on the front page for at least one week since your last one got on? that could probably help.

Very valid points! However, I think the front page is not very welcome to newer users, and doing this would make the front page a lot more accessible. It would not destroy the idea that the front page is a proud place to be, it's just making the front page welcome to a lot more people.

So, what coolstuff said basically, and also, you could always look at the *exact* top ten list to see the top 3, and keep in mind that the title is "What the community is x" - not "Top x" .

hmm, i guess you are right, i was only looking at the bad points of the idea. Maybe if instead of top 20, it were something a bit smaller, top 15, maybe. it doesn't make much sense for the projects with 2 or 3 remixes, or 20 or 30 views to be on the front page, so something slightly smaller than 20 would make sense. of course, there will still be a "see more" button, right?

Yep! I think the "See More" should stay, for all of the reasons you said. And I agree that 10 or 15 would be a good number.

Actually, it is ranked 8th, but that is still good! You were probably looking at "hot ideas."

ok, so basically it would be making EVERY row like Scratch Design studio. that sounds pretty fair, but maybe a little less random? i mean, when it is really random, some projects get WAY more time on the front page than others. maybe if instead of totally random, it was like, first, the 3 top projects would be on the front page for x time, then the next 4-6th top for x time, then the 7-9th top for x time, etc. that way, it would be fair for everyone, and then it starts the cycle over.
At first i hated this idea, but now i actually think it's a great one! i'm just wondering what the 'famous' scratchers will think about this

They'll still get front-paged... but other people will get a chance as well.

I support this! That way it won't be boring seeing the same person taking over the front page, and we can see something else that has some new stuff to share. I hope these changes can be applied to the website.

I love it when the discussion / conversation about an idea leads to things people hadn't considered when the conversation began.
This is a really interesting tweak. It's kind of like "weighting" the projects. Can you maybe write down a formula that the website could use to do this? Or what would you propose for the "x" times?

Eh... uh oh, it doesn't look like there is a way to change the initial title. I can change it for you though. I'll use the proposed text above, but let me know if you'd prefer something different.

Ooh, I love weighting
Count me in for this. I'm not sure of any current formulas, but I'll come up with some soon

This would help by allowing more projects to get exposure, spread the attention more! I voted!
However, I think a big problem with the front page remains:
It's trying to meet everyone's needs. We are very diverse... art, games, math, dogs, simple, flowers, complicated...
It's like a single shotgun shooting everything at everyone, when we need a bunch of snipers. (not the best analogy. )
I think we would rather target our projects to people interested in our types of projects. And easily find the types of projects we're interested in.
I hope we can find a good and easy way to do that. (I believe this may be a good direction, by making tags stronger and into mini-communities/frontpages, taking pressure off the front page; I'm hoping for more attention and help, or that we can find a better way to fix this problem.)

Thanks for the vote. I like the tag system also.

Wonderful idea! This focuses more on the community aspect, which is what Scratch is supposed to do, instead of having a specific group of famous people.

Yes!! I approve. I have like, 10 pages of good projects that absolutely NOBODY looks at.
Everyone is all at Swifty2's page, and Maki-Tak's pages! But famous Scratchers have more of a burden. Make more projects. Sweet irony, right?
