I prefer combinations of colors. In my opinion, light purple, for example, goes really well with light blue and light green, but absolutely does not go well with red. Brown isn't a totally fabulous color (again, only my opinion), but pair it with pale pink, blue, or purple and it looks pretty cool. See?
