If a monkey was raised by humans, would it be able to read or write?

Just wondering.  But if a monkey was taught to read, write, type, do maths, and so on, would it be able to?

If so, I want a pet monkey.   big_smile

Koko the gorilla understands English, but needs  to use sign language to speak. Her vocabulary is less than the average six year old, but it's still amazing.

I hear if you eat monkey brains, you get some kind of animal power or something.
The monkey probably won't learn math on its own, if that's what you're expecting it to do, but if you train it every day, it might do simple addition and subtraction. Most genius monkeys are bred by teams of scientists extensively

Monkeys can't read and write because they're never taught too.  We can read and write because we are taught how to as children.  If you start teaching the monkey when it's a baby, could it learn?

Probably, but it would be slower than teaching a human, since they aren't as intelligent.

Nope.

They don't have the Fox gene that allows them to form speech.

I highly doubt this, because the mental CAPACITY of a monkey is considerably lower then that of a human, so they are basically capable of learning and adapting less then humans are, in general. It would also depend who is raising this monkey, if it was a regular person, definately not. But who knows what it might be capable of doing if it was raised by a scientist.

I think so. If it was raised from when it was a baby. Baby monkeys are about as intellectual as a baby human, so I guess if you trained it like a human, possibly.

Exactly what I think.

Possibly a little. I doubt writing though, since there hands are structured a bit differently than a human's. However, I hate when people give the excuse,"Well they aren't nearly as smart as a human so no duuuh."

On the Koko website, he started petting a kitten and closing it's cage and such.

Why don't you keep a chart of how many people say yes/no?
