I bought a BRAND NEW microphone, to replace my old one, but this one and the previous one didn't work with Scratch. I don't want to download any extra software to help me, and I know that there's nothing wrong with the computer, because the mic is working (it registers sound on the control panel). Could someone help me? I don't have Scratch on any other computer. I use Scratch on a Samsung desktop, and use windows (in case you needed to know).

Well, I looked it up in the FAQ, but the answers there seem rather useless. Just in case, I'll give you a link here:
http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?id=250.
But it seems you've tried all that...

Try checking your options on your sound input. It might be set to your stereo output rather than mic volume. (Assuming you're on Windows,) Go to your control panel, then Sounds and Audio Devices, then the Voice tab. Under Voice Recording, click on Volume, and check to see if the box under "Mic volume" is checked. If it isn't, check it.

To add to what Harakou said, if you're on a Mac, you need to make sure you have the mic selected:

I read that, but I posted the Mac version for future reference.

about zeldagirl's problem:
scratch has (not just a few) problems with external devices such as webcams and mics.
mine don't work either

My control panel is slightly more advanced than that...
I go to the control panel, click audio devices under sound, and click the recording tab. Beside the word "Frontmic" is a little bar, showing the volume of the sound coming into the mic. It wavers up and down when I talk into it, but the mic doesn't work on Scratch.
My dad is going to download Audacity (not that I'm incapeable of doing that myself...I mean, I can download something if I can find the control panel and apply your advice). I'll probably use Audacity, but I don't want to work hard for every sound...my brother is also going to try to help me.

You'll have to give me a screenshot so I can see what you mean, sorry. You can definitely record with an external program and import the sound pretty easily. This could be a problem with Scratch for sure, but I'm not ruling out other possibilities just yet.
And LS97, the computer's OS wasn't included when I posted my first response.

CAN You record sound in the microsft sound recorder?
Start --> All programs ---> Accessories ----> Entertainment -----> sound recorder.
IF you use that, you can record sound as a .wav file and import it into Scratch.

Then try these to open Sound Recorder:
1. Press Windows + R.
2. Type "sndrec32" (without quotes).
3. Press Enter.

Why don't you download Audacity? It's free and easy to use
You can just import the sound you record in Audacity into Scratch.
I know you said you didn't want to download any other programs, but, oh well

Doesn't work? That means your computer doesn't have Sound Recorder. How strange your computer is.

If it is, then someone would have had to uninstall the sound recorder program. Which would be absurd.

Hmm...stuff has mysteriously disappeared before (like a 5-page-long poem of mine...) so maybe it's a glitch? I'll just download Audacity probably
