What are your opinions about the front page?

Do you think what goes on the front page deserves to be on there?

Do you think it's fair that some people can easily get the front page, while others have to struggle a ton and still may not get on?

Post your thoughts in this topic.

If you want to, remix this survey to voice your opinions.

Re: What are your opinions about the front page?

Before the new curator(s), I was really disappointed in the scratch team and almost quit.

Now, not so bad. Still not great though.

Re: What are your opinions about the front page?

To me the Front Page is obsolete. I know the users whose projects I enjoy and respect so I just go to them.

However, I know that's a really shortsighted view and means I'm less likely to experience newer talent within the site.

Re: What are your opinions about the front page?

There are a variety of opinions about this among Scratch Team. I'll share mine.

I would like to see a time limit for "stay on front page" - like the most you can be up there would be 2 days, after which you would not be eligible to be on the front page for a week or so.

I tested this manually as an experiment for a week or so a while back, and it seemed like we got more diversity on the front page - different kinds of projects by more different kinds Scratchers -  as a result.

This would mean more projects would get front paged, but for less time each.

Some felt that making the rules about getting on the front page more complicated would be confusing and off putting and would make Scratchers less motivated to participate, and that we'd be better off leaving it the way it is.  We couldn't come to a consensus, so we didn't make the change.

I think the time limit idea would be good, but I know that not everyone would agree.  sad

Actually, I think that a great idea! Give everyone who's been on the front page recently a twenty view/five love-it handicap for two weeks. Like if 08jackt had a project with 208 views, it would be behind a project by, lets say ihaveamac with 189 views. And if 08jackt still gets on the front page, next time he'll have a 40 view handicap. }:-)

Interesting! A "handicap" system of weights like you describe could be kind of neat. It's a little harder to describe / see what is happening though... Like how would anyone know what their current handicap would be, and how it would be likely to change in the next few weeks?

In general I like "weighting" systems like these because they don't absolutely prevent people from getting FP, just makes it a little harder for a while. But the problem of how to describe them clearly in ways that are easy to understand, even for newcomers, is an issue.

But in 08jackt's case, his hard work was not appreciated and it was a waste.

Personally I love the front page.

Especially when that 08jackt guy gets on it because he's so cool and handsome and not even remotely fat.

From the picture I saw in WaveOSBeta's appearance guessing thread, I beg to differ.

Anyways. Back on topic.

I still don't understand why people think this would be very confusing, because the scratch team does all the work.  hmm
I like the wheighting system best. but, it should last one month after the project gets off, then return to zero.

Umm.. When I look at the front page, I'm mainly looking at the Newest Projects or My Friend's Latest Projects. Those are the only two sections that interest me, usually.

Re: What are your opinions about the front page?

Sometimes, it's ordinary people who get on the front page, but I find that usuallly it's famous people who get on, just because they're famous.  I like it when ordinary people get on, though.  I got on once.  My Harry Potter vs. Twilight remixing poll got top remixed last august, on my birthday.  I like it when non-famous people get on, but otherwise I don't really like the way that it's mostly famous people.

EDIT:  Let me rephrase that.  Ordinary people do get on the front page, but famous people can get on without even trying.   sad
