downloads that appear fine but are incomplete

Just got it 4 times in a row. I am on dial-up.

What is happening to me is that my downloads are appearing to finish, even saving a complete-looking .sb but every attempt has a different file size and all of them are smaller than the actual size of the project.

Whoever is tweaking the server needs help! My uploads have been all but ruined (and so have other people's) since Nov 2009 and now even downloads are failing. Please, please don't forget about non-broadband users while doing your tweaking. Of course I am guessing that this is the problem but I am truly annoyed that no matter how many posts, comments, etc that I make, it is always presumed that the problem is on my end. ALL my other non-Scratch uploads and downloads still work slowly but fine, just as they always have. At least when I could download, I could help other people with their projects even if I can't upload anything over 200k anymore.  sad   hmm  ?!?

At this point, I'd settle for some kind of acknowledgment that POSSIBLY something has changed at the server(s) even if nothing is fixed yet.

Re: downloads that appear fine but are incomplete

I thought I could workaround by waiting for the project to load into the online player but even that stops short. And if I hit Reload Page it just goes straight to "done"

Re: downloads that appear fine but are incomplete

I don't use dial-up, so I can't really be sure what your problem is. Is it at all possible the the Scratch server has a sort of timeout on downloads and uploads, that kills the download if it takes too long? (I highly doubt it; just speculating here.)

Re: downloads that appear fine but are incomplete

That is exactly what I suspect because it is stopping my uploads while they are transferring and now it is doing the same to my downloads. Thing is, it is also telling my browser that the download is complete, or else the file would give an error message and be saved as a partial file.
Since transfers require communication between both computers, I'm guessing that someone changed how long the server waits for the users pc to "talk back" or maybe to reply to some specific request data.

Thanks for commenting!

Re: downloads that appear fine but are incomplete

I suppose that could be it. What I find odd is that timeouts usually occur when no data is being transferred, not very little. And then you usually get a timeout message, not a fake complete download...I'm honestly confused.

I don't use dial up either, but I've actually gotten this problem a few times, and so has samurai768.

That's odd. I have an idea: next time either of you starts a download, start timing it, and if it fails, record how long it took before it failed. If you get the same time several times, it could give us an idea as to what is causing the problem.

All of my Scratch Downloads download instantaneously, no matter if it's corrupt or not.

Re: downloads that appear fine but are incomplete

@mathematics- I just tried downloading your 1.8M "Hardcore Pong" project and had the same problem that all my downloads have been doing for around 2 weeks or so now, it got to 100%, began saying "Unknown time remaining" and continued to download for another 1:40 before actually finishing. But hey, at least it worked!

I have already posted about this problem but don't think I ever heard any answers about it either. But hey, at least it worked. Btw, all my downloads do this ever since the servers were worked on (I'm assuming that was what happened, bout 2 weeks ago or so, uploads were temporarily disabled then this problem began for me and has continued ever since.)

I also tried the project that keeps appearing to download but is incomplete and for the 7th time, it 'finished' incomplete again. If you want more nfo on that, here is a link to the post in AAS here

Apparently the server is sending faulty nfo about project sizes. The problem is that for all you broadbanders it happens so fast, you don't even notice the "extra" download time.

I really really hope that this nfo winds up in front of someone official AND that it helps fix al the people whose uploads have been crippled since Nov 2009. I have NOT updated/added plugins to/ or in anyway updated my browser. I am not running new/extra/different firewalls. Downloads and uploads from every other site have continued slowly but reliably as they have always been, only Scratch has been messed up. I can understand why it is natural to assume that the problem is on the users end but SOMEBODY on the team knows that server changes have been made, whether they wish to publicly acknowledge it or not.

If non-broadband users are simply being scripted out, I can understand that and accept it, I'd have no choice. But frankly, repeatedly being told 1. "get broadband" (I can't) or 2. "it is your computer" is becoming quite frustrating. I have tested uploads of all sizes, uninstalled and re-installed Scratch, turned off/removed all firewalls, checked my ip settings, tried (successfully) to upload from a different, broadband connected pc, and offered to help solve this problem in anyway up to and including reformatting my pc. I just don't know what else to do? A few more people have mentioned having the same "since Nov 2009" upload problem but just imagine how many never made it to the forums and/or just gave up and went away? Maybe we are just such a small percentage of users that we don't matter in the big picture. I don't mean that negatively, I just understand that when putting out fires you concentrate on the ones that appear biggest first.

So I should be looking for if they are downloading some more after they finished downloading?

@Ace- I dunno, that is what is happening to me at least on the downloads that work. The one I linked is the only oe I've had that 'finishes' early without actually finishing, all others finsh "late" but do at least truly finish. Sorry I haven't found more projects that fail but over dial-up, just thse experiments alone have taken countless hours and several evenings.

@ThePCKid- thanks for adding your comment! Do you have broadband or like us, a slower connection?

Re: downloads that appear fine but are incomplete

It's actually just this one project that I can't download. Well I haven't tried again yet but the first 3 attempts were unsuccessful. I only tried downloading 2 other projects besides that and they both worked though.

Re: downloads that appear fine but are incomplete

I downloaded another project to help someone in AAS. While downloading, it showed up as xxkb of 231kb, then it ran past the 100% for a bit and finished. But when I go look at the file, it is actually 284kb. ???

No, you aren't crazy  smile  Have you tried downloading from any other networks? Steal your neighbours' Internet connections for a few minutes (if they have wireless) and see if things work then.

Yeah, good point - we do it when our internet is down but it's really not the most ethical thing to do.

How about you try the library?

Broadband, but other users were having the same problem a couple months ago too. It was fixed about a week after.
