Explaining Choices for Featuring

On some featured projects, I see a lot of comments along the lines of "Why is this featured?" and "This doesn't deserve to be featured!" and "My projects are way better than this!," which, needless to say, really hurt the feelings of the creators of the projects. All projects that are featured are featured for a reason. I think the number of hurtful comments may decrease if every time a Scratch Team member features a project, he/she writes a short summery of why it is featured.  The easiest place to do this would be in a comment, although that would make it obvious who does the featuring, and Scratch Team members may get more comments from people who want to be featured. An alternative would be to have a box, perhaps under the project stats that says that the project is featured and why. For example...

User1's project "Fun Game" is featured. If you'd like to find out more about featured projects, go here.

This is a fun, challenging game with great sound effects. It was chosen to be featured because it demonstrates one way to use the arrow keys to move a sprite and because the method of keeping score is unique.

Whether the summary is in a comment or a separate text box, it might prevent users from asking why a project is featured, and if they do, the creator of the project can just refer them to the summary.

EDIT: I put it on the new suggestions forum. If you'd like to vote for it, here it is.  smile

Re: Explaining Choices for Featuring

Good idea! It would also help people see what the Scratch team is looking for in featured projects too, so they could improve!

SUPPORT completely and fully. I hate it when ignorant people just blindly yell at the creator of the project.

What an awesome idea! It would be nice if curators could do this to - often people dislike what the curator picks, so giving an explanation might help.  smile

Support ^^ People shouted at me a lot when MAZE2 was curated - it was a 0s1s project, and very few people seemed to notice that 0s1s is quite limiting...  hmm

That would be great! Now, many curators do explain their choices, and in fact, are encouraged to, so I think the first priority should be to do this for featured projects, but it would be great for curated projects too.

I agree with this topic. I see a lot of projects that are featured which I don't understand why they're featured, this would help in clarification.

I'm thinking that if Admins could "sticky" comments, we could use that feature to do what you are describing here. Stickied comments would stay at the top of a project's comments, just like stickied threads stay at the top of a forum.

Does that sound like a good solution to you guys?

That would be a great solution! Even just a normal comment would be fine, as long as there is an explanation.

Re: Explaining Choices for Featuring

OK, I didn't want to bump an old topic, but I had an idea about it.
(Etiquette question- would it be better to bump or make a new topic in this situation?)

The idea:

Recently, I've noticed that some projects have notes from moderators that add info or translate the instructions or something. Maybe the explanations could just be there.

Generally, if you have something to contribute to the topic, it's OK to bump it, but not if it's too old. In this case, I think you made the right decision by bumping it (and it is your topic after all).  smile

That would be a nice idea, but it would be the Scratch Team that made the addition, not mods, since mods don't have any special powers over the main website yet (and do mods help choose featured projects? IDK, because to be honest, I don't really get on the main website much... XD).

Regarding the main/general idea, I support!  big_smile

Like what meowmow55 said, it's usually okay to bump an old topic if it's relevant. In this case, it is since you wanted to bring back your old idea.  smile

That would pretty a pretty cool workaround for the the Scratch Team to use considering the current system that is in place.

I support the idea. I think it would cut down on the snarky comments that ask the creator why his/her project was featured (which is rather unfair to the creator since it is not the creator's decision on what gets on the front page anyway), as well as show some insight into what the Scratch Team likes.  smile
