Re: Why we ban....

That used to be there, but it was removed... I don't know why, but my guess is that it was embarassing to the banned users.  hmm

Hmph enjoy your fall - I get a lovely spring... without pans of new leaves.

I think he means a thing which allows you to say whether or not you want to have it say if the user is banned or not.

Lightnin wrote:

It seems like there is a lot of fear and confusion in the community right now about banning, so I thought I'd explain why we block people, and what they can do to get unblocked.

We block people who make comments, posts, or projects that go against our Terms of Use. If you haven't read them, please do - we spent a long time making them brief and to the point. They're way different from the usual stuff you find on other sites and don't contain a lot of boring legal stuff.

http://info.scratch.mit.edu/Terms_of_use

This is one of the most important points in the Terms of Use:

Be respectful. When sharing projects or posting comments, remember that people of many different ages and backgrounds will see your contributions.

This brief statement covers a lot of things: don't use bad language, don't talk about stuff that wouldn't be appropriate for a kids website are a few obvious examples. But it also means don't disrespect anyone just because you don't agree with them, or just because they like a kind of project that you don't care for.

Scratch is a big place, but the front page isn't. A lot of people have gotten annoyed that the projects they see on the front page aren't the ones they like to look at. It's fine to express dissatisfaction, but it's even better to help think of solutions so that all different kinds of people can be represented. But it's not okay to say that Scratch is only for your kind of projects, or that projects that you don't like don't have any value. And starting threads for the purpose of creating arguments and flame wars is definitely not respectful, and will probably result in your account being banned.

So, most people who get blocked get another chance if we really believe they are willing to change. But don't ask us who has or hasn't been blocked - that's a private matter between us and the account holder.

If you have any other questions about our policy, post them here and I'll answer them. But please be patient! There's always plenty to do on the Scratch website, and not that many Scratch Team members to do a lot of work...  smile

I corrected you.

Yeah, we don't make what was done to bring about the ban public, because we don't want to embarrass or shame the account holder. But that does make our decisions sometimes seem arbitrary.  hmm

But most of the time its or the rest of scratch's own good, you wouldn't want people going around, avoiding being banned because they're popular.

Took the words out of my mouth, lol.

Like what if someone really popular was banned for doing something really bad, but their  fans voted against their banning, and they weren't banned even though they had dome what they did? That would be a problem.  hmm

Exactly. And thats why its not in place. Much easier to leave it to the scratch team to do it, they've got more experience in deciding whether to ban or not.

Wouldn't being embarrassed just give them more motivation to not get banned after the first time (or at all)? In addition, public ban logs give people a scenario which they can expressly know not to emulate. Either way, if reasons aren't made public it's way too easy for a malicious banned person to just spread around rumors and scream bias, and then you have an even worse situation if he's popular and people actually believe him (or her).

Maybe I'm just overthinking it - Scratch has always been a much simpler place than other communities I go to in terms of moderation, rules, and procedures.

Finally, no voting democracy on bans please. Maybe it would work in another community, but I can certainly imagine people constantly breaking the rules and not getting banned because of popularity here if a vote system was established.

I'm okay with being publicly humiliated when I get banned.
Of course, I'm on the last straw already, so it's a one way ticket.

And yeah, I don't want people voting on the bans either.

Well, that's part of the reason, but there's still not a lot of room on the front page, even with curators.

I've just read this chain of replies, and none of them seem to have anything to do with the next. Do people just quote for the fun of it?
Anyway, about what Lightnin said, I recently saw a whole topic band together people to report some project that got curated, when obviously it's done nothing wrong. Whenever I see drama on Scratch, I think to myself, this can't be serious, it's too overboard, so I put it off as a television show being played out. It helps me keep my eyeballs from bleeding. The project that was taken down was actually representative of the part of the community that still believes in Kaj.
