Help with lesson plans / scheme of work in KS2 (UK)

I am new to Scratch and am by no means an expert in using it.  However my class have had a play with Scratch and they loved it.  Several of them went home and downloaded it for themselves.  In September I will be teaching QCA unit 6c (Monitoring Sensors, Modeling effects etc) Current planning in school uses SEQ (which I have no experience of) and Flowol (which I think is awful and boring - kids think so too!!).  I would love to use Scratch instead or alongside but do not feel confident enough to do so and write lesson plans etc.  They need to be able get a set of traffic lights working, alarms etc. Can anyone help please?  Maybe some of you have some planning or a scheme of work that you have tried and tested that I could adapt or have some advice on how I could get started?  Am very keen to make my children's learning fun and think this is the way to go!

Wow! You actually visit the Educators forum? Nice tips they have there, if I were a teacher I'd teach Scratch!

Believe it or not, most teachers that I know, including myself, don't have much choice about what programming vehicles they use to teach.

Dick Baldwin - Don't get stuck scratching. When you master Scratch, move on up to more serious programming languages. Free online programming tutorials:
Scratch - Alice - Java - C# - C++ - JavaScript - XML - Python - DSP

This is exactly what my class are doing, and I do agree Flowol is quite boring. Maybe you could look at the sample projects and try to understand what they mean. I am no expert but perhaps you could look at my projects? It uses broadcasts and variables alot.  smile

Re: Help with lesson plans / scheme of work in KS2 (UK)

Thanks to all of you who have replied with helpful info and links.  Am actually quite excited about taking this forward as I know that the kids are going to pick up Scratch very quickly.  Some of the info has been really helpful and I think that I will definitely be using Scratch with my pupils.  Have some ideas on projects we might try and will let you know how they get on. Hopefully if things work well, am going to persuade school to integrate Scratch into planning in other year groups as well.  We will be guinea pigs and I think I will have to use some of the Flowol stuff alongside to satisfy certain people!!!  Tried and tested and all that!!  The great thing is that using both programs, I know which one the children will prefer!  Thanks again.

Re: Help with lesson plans / scheme of work in KS2 (UK)

Hi,

It's a long while since I've written n the forum but have been very busy introducing Scratch into school.  Using the Scratch cards from the site to begin with to teach basic skills I introduced it in lessons along-side the standard Flowol we were meant to be using. It really took off and proved more popular in terms of learning how to 'control' actions etc.

We have begun uploading recent projects under 'greenacres' so please take a look and I would be really grateful for any comments left on their projects.  They haven't left their names or anything but just all upload from my log-in.  Their projects are really quite simple but they are developing very quickly and want to do more all the time.  I

have started a Scratch Club today and hope that this proves popular - think it will.  We have also purchased a pico-board which is absolutely fantastic and so much fun.  I hope to be able to persuade people at school that we need several of these and can then use Scratch together with the board to replace the dull units of "Control, Monitoring and Sensing' etc which currently use Flowol or SEQ.  FIngers crossed.

My class blog also features a page devoted to Scratch and contains links to our projects.  Once again thanks to everyone who helped me.  I am keen to link up with any other school who are having success with Scratch or would be happy to help anyone else who would like to get started!  However, am still not an expert - children are rapidly learning ore than I know!!!
