Re: saxaphone tips

I don't have a Saxaphone but my friend got one recently.
1. What type of saxaphone is it?
2. have you ever played any instruments before? If so, what have you played?

Re: saxaphone tips

So you've never played an instrument with a reed before?
My friend plays an Alto sax.

Re: saxaphone tips

Ok then. To start with the reed will taste disgusting, but that will go away with time. Make sure that when you are playing, you don't press down to hard on the reed or it will not be able to vibrate and the instrument will not make any sound (sounds obvious but even when I'd been playing the clarinet for almost 2 years,I had that problem and I couldn't work out what to do.) I've been told that if you leave the reed in the mouthpiece too long it will go black, so I suggest you don't do it.

That's all I can really tell you as I only played the clarinet. I hope you enjoy playing  smile

Re: saxaphone tips

When I was pressing to hard on my reed, it actually took me ages to work out why my instrument wasn't working. My teacher couldn't even find the problem, but I solved it. Eventually.

Re: saxaphone tips

I play an alto sax.  Since I'd been already been playing the flute for three years before I started sax, I started using a two and a half sized reed.  You might want to use one that's similar to that.  Saxophones use a lot of air until you learn how to control it better.  To make sound, I held my head back a little, put my teeth on the mouthpiece, and blew.  For your first note, you might want to try C# (none of the keys pressed), since I find that the easiest beginning note.

No keys make the simplest note?  tongue  I'm using a 2 1/2 reed.

Yeah, 2 1/2 is a good size for a beginner.  After a few years, though, they'll want you to upgrade to a size 3 or something.

When doing an F#, imagine you're flicking off the annoying idiot that got last chair, behind you.

^^ Yep. I'm going into 7th, and play the Alto.
