Improvement on the Website

I think There should be a new feature added on Scratch where older Scratch members can help newer ones.  It would kind of be like the "adopt a new Scratcher" idea, but better set up.  There would be a section on the menu bar for beginners.  When they go there they can choose from Scratchers in their time zone who have offered up their services on that part of the site.  They would get their own chat box so that they can discuss what the beginner wants to do and what the older Scratcher can do to help.  Maybe even make video chat available, but that would be a little encroaching of privacy.  Anyway, once the Scratcher has gotten all they need, they can unchoose the other Scratcher and begin work.  The Scratcher beginner limit should be six months, and the Scratcher helper minimum should be 6 months to a year.  Once a helper is chosen, their name disappears from the section of helpers and can only return there when the Scratcher puts it there.

Discuss.

Re: Improvement on the Website

Not a bad idea, if some older users (me) have that time on their hands.  smile  I just can't see that Scratch team allowing chatting at all, but maybe something like coolstuff mentioned below would be good.

Re: Improvement on the Website

That's a great idea! I'm not sure about the live chat (as the Scratch Team have said multiple times that it will not be implemented) but something of a private message board would work great. And because the older Scratcher probably has more experience, if there's anything to report, the older Scratcher can easily and efficiently contact the Scratch Team about it. I'm not sure about the six month idea - it's a little bit long, and people may lose dedication, which actually brings up the point of if the older Scratcher leaves. The selection process could also be somewhat disappointing if somebody didn't get chosen... All in all, a few kinks to work around but a great idea.

I didn't mean a full six months.  I meant for the time that the beginner thinks he needs it.  Yeah, that would be a problem if a Scratcher is chosen, yes.  But we could try and work this idea at the very least.

Re: Improvement on the Website

I like the idea, but as coolstuff said, I doubt any sort of chat will be implemented. Also, a one-to-one chat seems to pose a disadvantage.

What makes the All About Scratch forum so great is that you have multiple people contributing to help a Scratcher in need of help. With a one-on-one chat, if the more experienced Scratcher gets stumped, (it happens) it's harder to get other input. Multiple contributors also gets more ideas on how to solve the problem into the pool.

Why not? I don't see anything wrong with it - what don't you like about it? If you explain why, we might be able to come up with a better one  smile

Re: Improvement on the Website

That wasn't actually my title suggestion, it was just a way to describe something that was already going on, where older scratchers would sometimes friend people on the new scratcher list to see if they needed help, encourage them, and make them feel welcome.
