Re: how does scrolling work?

There are several topics about this. Try searching "scrolling tutorials" at the top right hand corner of the page.

Re: how does scrolling work?

Scrolling is basically making sprites appear on one side of the screen and disappearing on the other, at certain intervals. I'd check out the tutorial, but remember that it's just an illusion, and not a feature of Scratch. If you just want scrolling backgrounds that your character can run on, I suggest Archmage's Efficient scrolling Demo. It's practically ready-made, just draw or import your own backgrounds. Just make sure the end of each background lines up with the beginning of the next one.
