Scratch for Palm Pre and Palm Pixi

I thought it would be cool if Scratch made a Scratch for the Palm Devices like The Palm Pre, Palm Pixi, Palm Pre2, Palm Pre3, Palm Veer, and HP TouchPad. I have the Palm Pixi and my other family members have the Palm Pre so I would love to have it on my phone. SO PLEASE POST YOUR IDEAS I REALLY WANT SCRATCH TO DO THIS.

This what Scratch sent to me via EMAIL...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

The best place to post suggestions like this one is in the Scratch Suggestions forum. That way lots of community members can see and comment on your ideas. We always check the suggestions forum when considering new features for Scratch.

It's best to post one suggestion at a time. That way everyone can contribute their thoughts on how to improve it. And it's always good to make a Scratch project that demonstrates how your new feature will look and work.

We are looking into making a Scratch player for Android, and we'd be open to someone else making a player for Palm. But we're really busy with Scratch 2.0 stuff, so it's unlikely we'll get to this soon.

Scratch On!

Re: Scratch for Palm Pre and Palm Pixi

Well, mobile devices vary so much that it'd be impossible to have it available for all of them.

Section 11 of this thread addresses the issue. To save you time, I'll post it right here:

This has been there for a long time, but I never had all the information I wanted. But after a good hard dig, the information was found! Thanks to cocoanut for the idea.

All of us want to use Scratch on our cell phones, IPhones; pretty much any small handheld gadget that you have.
Sorry, but the answer is no.

They don't support Java, Squeak, or other neccessary things. There was a suggestion for Xbox, but... how are you supposed to program? Or was it for playing? It wasn't very clear, but still.

Magnie put it well:

Well said... a single sentence can say it all.  smile

Overall, this is a fairly simple matter: If you're curious, check if your gadget has the neccessary features. If you're not sure, you can check with your parents, the manual (somewhere abandoned on your bookshelf, covered with dust), or a friend.

And right there you have it. Even if the device did support that, it would be quite difficult for the Scratch Team to program for it, and very, very few people would actually use it.

You may be able to run it on some mobile devices, in a very limited and slow fashion, through mobile Squeak VMs. More details: here.

Of course, all that is probably too high-tech for most people. Essentially, it won't happen.

Re: Scratch for Palm Pre and Palm Pixi

I used my friend's Pre the other day and I was generally amazed by it. Of course, a Scratch player for every device would be great, but as long as Scratch continues to use the weird .sb format it probably won't happen until, sigh, 2.0, if it uses an XML storage format instead.

Gosh, it seems like the answer to EVERYTHING is "wait for 2.0"...  tongue

Well

But it most likely doesn't have a very good Squeak VM, also required to run Scratch. However, to run the projects, Java or some other code interpreter is all that's required - which is how Scratch projects made their way onto the iPhone.
