What I've been recently working on: Sorting LEGOs

Now ya see, I happen to have a rather large lego collection. I have a couple complete models that I didn't destroy, but most of them I do destroy, which leaves us with this, and a bit more that I couldn't fit:

http://i993.photobucket.com/albums/af54/lucario621/HNI_0032.jpg

Yeah. A lot, I'd say.

So firstly, I started by removing all of the non-legos like different wrappers and paper clips I found in there, as well as pieces from other lego rip-offs, like COBI and Megablocks. It takes a long time, and it's hard to get all of them. But I end up with a large bag of pieces. And it's still a work-in-progress.

Next, I'm mainly trying to actually sort the pieces. Now if you're not much of a LEGO fanatic, and just a casual builder, you'd think "Oh yeah, sorting by color! That can't possibly be that hard." Well that's not really the right thing to do. Generally, you go by the piece, and if there's a lot of it, you go by color - so only sometimes.

Right now, small ziploc bags are the only think I have to use, as well as the tiny LEGO Advent Calender compartments, but I plan to get more containers, like the ones used for fishing bait, and sandwiches, dinners, and more.

Do you play with LEGOs? How big is your collection? Do you have it messed up like mine, or organized?

Re: What I've been recently working on: Sorting LEGOs

my collection is either built, or completely messed up. I have two boxes, maybe 12" long by 6" wide by 6" tall. outside that, I have a huge aircraft carrier, which is in two pieces because I just moved. I started (well, I didn't really do much) making stop-motion movies with them a couple of years ago.

I use Knex, although i do have several sets of legos. As for sorting problems, try sorting over 8000 pieces of connectors and rods. Not fun.

My collection is huge, I have 5 boxes of legos.

I keep them organized by piece and color.

Whatever I sort gets messed up. So I don't bother anymore. Finding parts in one of my boxes is like mining for gold, you might find something completely different and find a use for it.

Re: What I've been recently working on: Sorting LEGOs

I have three gigantic binfuls of LEGO which I haven't gotten around to sorting. I really should - the bins are full of all sorts of non-LEGO junk. Glad to see somebody has taken the initiative to do so with their own.

Sounds exciting...  tongue

No, I don't use Legos. We do have a bin of Legos that we goof with occasionally, but it is just the basic stuff.

So, with my upbringing the plural of LEGO has always been LEGO. But everyone else seems to call it LEGOs. Which one is it?

IIRC, the Lego company likes people to refer to them as "Lego bricks".

I have some basics, but we lost 90% of them.

My cousin has all the Star Wars Legos XD Except for the $500 Mill Falcon LEGO replica.  tongue

Re: What I've been recently working on: Sorting LEGOs

Put together, my brother and I have a fairly big collection of LEGO blocks. At some point, we disassembled everything and had it organized into stackable bins, split between Freestyle-type blocks and the other stuff, then further organized each section by shape and color.  smile

Re: What I've been recently working on: Sorting LEGOs

One time, I had this lego set with these samurai warriors, but my brother dumped it into the giant lego bin we already had. I never finished building it, couldn't find the pieces.
Nowadays, I don't play with lego, except I still have a few bionicles on the shelf in my room gathering dust.

I have about eight boxes worth.  Not sorted at all, so when you're looking for a particular piece that isn't common, it's a Lot of *fun*.
