Question about scratch users.

What is the average age of a scratch scripter?

Re: Question about scratch users.

That's a hard question to answer.  Some related questions that might be easier:
    1) mean age of people who have scratch.mit.edu accounts
    2) median age of people who have scratch.mit.edu accounts
    3) mean (and median) age of people who have uploaded projects
    4) mean (and median) age of people who have uploaded projects, weighted by number
        of projects uploaded.

Re: Question about scratch users.

Alright. Lets just go with that. Standard Deviation would be good too.

So I want these:
    1) mean age of people who have scratch.mit.edu accounts
    2) median age of people who have scratch.mit.edu accounts
    3) Standard Deviation of the ages of people who have scratch.mit.edu accounts
    4) mean (and median and STD) age of people who have uploaded projects
    5) mean (and median and STD) age of people who have uploaded projects, weighted by number of projects uploaded.

Re: Question about scratch users.

Hi guys,

Here's a histogram I made based on a snapshot of the stats last month around June 9th. These are the people who have signed up on scratch.mit.edu and who reported an age between 2 and 100. (click for full size)
http://www.media.mit.edu/~silver/scratch/allPopulation.jpg
From this histogram you can see that it is hard to say what age a typical scratcher really is since they are distributed across almost all ages. The most common age is a young teen, while post-teenagers are pretty evenly represented. Let's take a closer look at that younger population (click for full size)

Here you can see the age breakdown by year -- with one bar representing one year. The peak is dominated by 10-14 year olds.
