Projects being checked before they go on to Scratch
I have an idea that instead of having a project be immediately on Scratch after uploading, it could be checked by people of the Scratch team to make sure it is not inappropriate. I am mainly making this suggestion because I am sick and tired of seeing inappropriate projects on Scratch.

It's a good thought, but there are so many projects uploaded daily that it would just be too much for the Scratch team. That's what the flag as inappropriate button is for, to flag inappropriate projects so the Scratch team can look at them.

Yeah, it certainly would take up a lot of resources. And a lot of projects are taken off just moments after they're uploaded if they're inappropriate. I think the flagging system works great at the moment, anyhoo

It's a good idea, but seeing that a new project is uploaded about every 2 minutes, it would take a lot of time and effort to check all those projects. That is about 930 projects/day! So if you spent about 5 minutes checking each project, that is 4150 minutes, or about 70 hours. This means it would take 70 hours (almost 3 whole days) to check a days worth (24 hours) of projects!

That's what youtube does... it doesn't work at all though. I like the thinking, but nowadays on Scratch, there are so many projects made daily, it would be far to much work in addition to all they do now. Come up with more good ideas though. It's obvious that you are one of the few who can.

I like the thought about it, but it is a bit inpractical.
However, if the Scratch Team were to select a group of say 20 people from all over the globe (all over the globe because then users could monitor roughly projects from their country) and these people could be the ones who do the check whether or not a project is appropriate.
But for this to work, the projects that they monitor would probably have to be greater than 1 mb (this 'gets rid' of school projects which are usually simple mazes). I'm assuming that the 1b rule will cover music and images.
But then again, if you're saying inappropriate meaning swearing, a project that just has something like the Scratch cat saying a swear word will fly under the radar.
But either way it goes, there are always people checking out newest projects (i'm one of them) and obviously if they feel it's inappropriate, they will flag it.

Also a problem is this that with interactive projects may have hidden content. So a moderator would need to download and review every costume.
Scratch could link files instead of including them in the scratch file. Costumes, sprites, scripts, and sounds could be searched like scratch projects. Common files like the scratch cat would only be on the website once.
This would make it easier to review projects for content.
(It would also save on server storage space and credit for remixed scripts and modified costumes could also be tracked more easily.)

It's very true that it would be impossible to check every project, but if we knew where the projects were coming from, it might be easier to nail more of 'em. For instance, most inappropriate projects probably fit these criteria:
-- From new users or users who don't post too often
-- ^ Users with a short friends list
-- ^ Users with a history of posting inappropriate projects
-- Contain rude words in the title, description, or tags
-- Have few views and love-it's
-- Relatively new projects
If we just looked at projects like these, it might be feasible (but still not very practical) to screen many of them.

Maybe the Scratch team could automate some of this process, such as scripting that automatically sends projects that have inappropriate keywords, are from users with bad records in that area, etc. to moderators? (In a separate section than flagged projects)
