Ugh, this is one reason we are looking forward to Scratch 2.0 - no uploading / downloading required!
This glitch has been really hard to nail down.
Have you tried disabling your security software? can you tell us what version of Windows you are running (and what version of Scratch?)

Are you considering including BYOB3? I would be really disappointed if I had to choose between one or the other.

Thanks Lightnin, I already posted all that stuff earlier in this thread. I am 38 yrs old and have been on pcs since before Windows
so yeah, I've tried all kinds of stuff. I uploaded another tiny file (54k) today and got a bizarre Windows Error message that I accidentally closed too fast, something about my 56k modem? So I will go that route soon I guess, weird that only Scratch uploads seem to affected though. I will also try an upload from a completely different pc and report back, should be a few hours.
ps.. This has been going on for me so long, I've kind of given up. I'm certainly not complaining, things happen lol, I only posted because someone thought this old error/post had been resolved.
"Scratch 2.0 - no uploading / downloading required!" - hmmm, hope that isn't the death of Scratch usability for us lowly modem users >=P

1. Your computer's operating system: Windows
2. The version of Scratch: 1.4
3. The name and version of your anti-virus software: Think it's Avast
4. Any details you can give us about when you receive the failed: unknown reason error: I tried to share at many times of day from my house. Only one project won’t upload, but will upload if I delete a certain sprite.
5. What country: USA
6. Info about sprite: The sprite is the opening of the project. This project is for Old Town Productions http://scratch.mit.edu/galleries/view/83266. Here’s the project where I got the opening: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/RocksAndFire/1082621. I haven’t change any scripts

Sorry so slow... and bad news for me I guess. I finally tried two bigger projects from a completely different connection and pc and they uploaded just fine. I say bad for me because whatever this problem is, it has persisted through multiple anti-virus runs and an updated and running Windows Defender. Oddly enough, it doesn't seem to affect any other internet activities, up or downloading. I have also uninstalled, re-downloaded and installed Scratch but with no good luck.
I am fairly computer savvy so if any official type people would like to use my bad account for diagnostics, fix attempts, etc I'd be more than happy to help!

Well, I know this means nothing right now, but when I tried to share a project on one computer(we sold it) it made me shut it down!
The Things You Said:
1.Mac
2.Scratch 1.4
3.None, Mac doesn't get viruses.
4.Uh, it was any time I tried to share a Scratch project on that computer.
5.USA, of course. But still, Japan FTW! XD

Maybe you typed your username or password wrong when uploading. That's happened to me a couple times, and I fixed it by typing my password in correctly.

I think in this case, it doesn't display "unknown reason". It displays "invalid user".

I was able to upload it once, but there was a glitch in the project, and I couldn't update it because of this problem. I removed the project and tried to reupload it, and I couldn't reupload it.

I was able to upload the project today without any problems.

I'm having the exact same problem.
I run WIndows VIsta Home Primium 64-bit
Scratch 1.4
"Windows Defender", "Spybot: Search & Destory" and "AVG 8.5.437 Free" with Virus Database 271.1.1/2950
Happens on everything in Scratch. Always had this problem. Read my forum to get tips from Coka and to help me resolve this error.

I just had a random crazy idea... What if "Failed: Unknown Reason" is because of 64 bits?!
I noticed there haven't been many XP reports. Maybe that's because not many XP OS versions are 64 bit! Almost all newer operating systems are!
So, can I have some evidence? If you have experienced this problem before please post your bit version!

Well, I'm sure if it was because of 64 bits, there would be a lot more reports from users than there already is. Plus, most users can upload with a 64-bit OS - I exclusively run 64-bit Operating Systems and it works fine for me...
Sounds to me that XP is just a lot more stable than subsequent versions of Windows.

I have had this problem since November!
1. Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
2. Scratch 1.4
3. AVG 9.0 Free
4. Any project I try.
5. I am proudly in the US, which is celebrating it's 234th birthday today!
Happy Fourth of July!

Again, I have xp (not 64 bit) and I have this problem. But a recent round of viri eradication, I was able to upload my first 600k project in 8 months lol.

I haven't been able to upload again but I tried something and got weird results. I added an extra letter "v" in the middle of my username and tried to upload. Instead of a 'bad user' error it seemed to connect for 10 or 15 seconds then I got the "unknown reason" error again. Doesn't that seem odd?
I am going to shoot a video of my connection attempt. One thing that bothers me is that the window messages while uploading are totally out of sync with what Scratch appears to be doing (through observation of the blinking internet connection icon on my Windows Taskbar - I'm on dial-up)

That's weird... I have no clue what that means.

Wow, that's actually one of the threads of mine I'm NOT happy for it to be alive. So... you people are still having this problem? I haven't tried anything now, since I took a break from programming in Scratch due to exams (few of GCSEs I was doing earlier, but now I'll have to go back to Poland *sob*) and human laziness, under a guise of waiting for 2.0 (and I'm really waiting for it now). I'm soon (about mid-August) getting a new, 64bit Windows 7 computer, and I'm considering split-partitioning it with Ubuntu, just to see which OS feels better for me.
However, I'm not exactly pleased to hear that the bug now affects 64 bit systems. Maybe this problem is directly related to the way (presumably 32-bit) Squeak VM communicates with the system (via WOW64 and no, it's not world of warcraft) - so check on it. To Scratch team: have you managed to extract some information from that file I sent you few months ago? It's about time you come up with something ,

What about BYOB3? That's WAY more fun than Scratch 2.0!

I don't think they care anymore, since Scratch 2.0 will be on the internet in the first place.
