well i agree the Hoch Poch that will be caused if we rank em on the projects

but can we rank em on how long they are here

ranks can be like

1. New scratcher
2. Scratcher ( Somewhat used to scratcher)
3. Old member (people like hmm who are for long hmm me !)
4. Good Scratcher : ( Guyz like 08jackt , jonathan etc)
5. Great Scratcher ( For guyz like Rhy and archmage)

These can be based on algorithms like

Rank Point = Sum(Rankpoint_allprojects)+Time_spent_here;

define Rankpoint_AllProjects = ( no of loveits/no of views ) * 100% //% of ur projects being loved ..

that will enhance the competition and make em do b8r

also it will give all the scratchers an idea of what are they and they can actually  go and ask for help from the good ones (: watcha say?

IT was really pain in speaking it all

If that would happen, Doody would be new scratcher, even if she is 8 months here already.

And why did you post in C++ code? Scratch uses PHP...

She gets about 50 views but only 1-2 loveIts. 1/50=0.02, that's very few. If I would set the ranking values, I would say 0 - 0.05 is new scratcher, 0.05 - 0.15 is scratcher, 0.15 - 0.2 is old member, 0.2 - 0.4 is good scratcher, and 0.4 - 1 is great scratcher.

Re: User Ranking System

Fanofcena, your system may have been well thought out, but it won't work. You can't say one person is better then the other officially, even if it may be true. It's unspoken. Besides, this will be like putting a huge sign on people that says "I suck at Scratch"

So it the system evaluates you, then puts you into one of the few categories, ranging from Scratcher to Experience scratcher, before you are ranked you are simply classed as New Scratcher,
Ok, lets see, it goes:
New Scratcher
Scratcher
Old Member
Good Scratcher
Experience Scratcher

Chrischb wrote:

But that would make users get all fiercely competitive... and it doesn't seem right to have some users above others.  hmm

Fierce competition is already applied at people with popularity(100-500) versus the others (1-50). A handful of users(say, 100, 250?), no matter what color of the rainbow of popularity, has a disorder that if stressed, triggers a life-threatening reaction. Maybe some users that want popularity fake that they have a stress-triggered disorder.

Re: User Ranking System

I wrote this in another thread, but I think it applies here too:

Yahoo has design patterns for website makers, where they advise others based on their experience.  Here's what they say about user points and ranking:

Yahoo wrote:

Points

Maintain and display a cumulative count of the number of points user has earned within a community.

The points generally come from performing specific activities on the site.

Points are best-awarded to congratulate performance rather than merely to acknowledge activity.

What Problem Does This Solve?
In some communities, participants want a tangible measurement of their accomplishments for personal satisfaction and to make comparisons with other competitors.

When to Use This Pattern
Use this pattern when the community is highly competitive, and the activities that users engage in are competitive in nature (e.g., player-vs-player contests, or coaching a fantasy football team).
Points are generally discouraged, except in cases where the fundamental, primary purpose of the community is competition, such as fantasy sports or games.

Specifically, don't use this pattern when
- The activities that users engage in are not competitive in nature (e.g., writing recipes, or sharing photos).
- The awarding of points might demean or devalue the activity that they're meant to reward. By pinning an arbitrary incentive value to an activity, you may unintentionally replace a user's satisfying intrinsic motivation with a petty extrinsic one.
...
On the Yahoo! network, Ranking and Leaderboards are generally discouraged, except in cases where the fundamental, primary purpose of the community is competition, as with Fantasy Sports or Games.

read more here and here.  I think the same applies for Scratch, which I think should be encouraging collaboration instead of competition.

We do already have top viewed, top loved, and I think those do more to make a few users popular, and is like a ranking system for the entire site, instead of helping scratchers find projects they might like, and other scratchers with similar interest that will be more likely to help each other out.  (cough, cough, favetags, cough...
Although FaveTags may encourage some competition among some of the more popular tags.  But I think, the community will branch out into more specific tags they like, and will move the focus from wanting to be popular to the whole site, to just people interested in similar things... where there will be less competition and more collaboration, hopefully.)

Re: User Ranking System

I Think that a ranking system would be great for the website, people gain points with contributions, and, depending on the popularity and quality, get more points, and gain points for LOVE IT's, and for favourites on their projects, and for helping others on their projects, and remixing to beter quality, but lose points for negetive things, such as: being mean in comments, being rude, uploading something rude/offensive/mean, something that upsets people, if it upsets them to leaving, then the user looses about 50 points, if you get lower than negative 10 points, get temporarily banned, higher ranks will grant special site abilities, such as slight oderation, admin, ability to remove certain aspects of site, edit site within reason, lower ranks wil lose some abilities, such as: lower comment letters available to use, set a maximum of how many projects able to use, (i cant think of anything else reasnonable right now)
