How surprising is surprise?

I notcie that the "surprise projects" aren't really surprise. Usually, the have projects by the same user or projects that have to do with each other. A few minutes ago (not the only time) I saw 3 remixes of a project. So are the surprie projects random? Or are they chosen?

They appear to be random, but there seems to be a higher chance of getting three projects by the same author, three projects uploaded at the same time, or three projects somewhat related in another way.
