Recorded sounds, where are they saved?

This question was prompted by some of the messages in the ScratchBand thread.

When you select the Sounds tab on a sprite, and then click the Record button, a control box appears to allow you to record sounds.  However, I don't see any indication of where and how that sound is saved.  Can someone explain how to use this capability?

Well, I kinda get this question. All i know is that, if your recording from the background (go to the stage and hit record) only the stage can play it. I fond that out by accidentally recording it on the sprite, so the background didn't have it.

Well, I partially understand now.  I was trying to use the built-in microphone on my laptop and it was doing nothing.  When I plug in an external microphone, at least something gets recorded and it shows up under the pop sound when I click OK.  Unfortunately, all I get is static so I'll keep on playing with it.

how can the sprite only have it, can't you export the sound so that both can have it?
