What guide/tutorial should I write?

After I fail my math test on Wednesday I have a few days with no work !
(me and math don't have a very good relationship with each other...)

So, to make use of that time I plan to write 1 guide/tutorial on something scratch users want to be able to do. I will try to explain things as simply as possible and will assume you know nothing except how to use the blocks.

I was considering doing one of the following

-scrolling platformer game tut
-4 sprite 4-way scrolling guide
-RPG battle engine guide

Any thoughts/suggestions

PS: This is for the wiki

Not really into the mesh thing since you need to unlock it and run hammichi and stuff.

I would rather make a guide that most people would find handy.

I think the scrolling platformer tutorial might be handy - many users want to learn about that stuff.  smile

Re: What guide/tutorial should I write?

Personally, I'd ask you to do a RPG battle guide - but that's just me XD

You Should do whatever subject you think you can explain in most detal but in the most simplicity.

Well, don't worry about it, the Zara siggy will be back soon, new and improved! ^^ Meanwhile, just do what the sig tells you to. >.>

I still don't know how to make a scroller without making excessive sprites... So the 4-way scroller for meh  tongue

Maybe...
Make A tutorial on how to scroll...then include an enemy that will try to attack you and involve a battle engine tutorial?!

Yay!!!

Re: What guide/tutorial should I write?

I was thinking I would maybe first start out with things like scrolling grids and battle engines and then later write on how to combine them. So when it says "add a scrolling grid here" it will refer you to previously written tutorials.

But regardless of what I do in the future, I want the first one to be doable by anyone who puts the effort in to try to understand how to make things work. It really baffles me when I try to explain things as clearly as possible and people still don't seem to understand anything
(like here -> http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?id=38371)
But in cases like that I am going to assume that people didn't even bother to understand because they were hoping for an "easier" way or something.

Re: What guide/tutorial should I write?

You don't get along with Maths yet you know everything (ok, not everything. Right?) about programming o__o;?

Anyway, I'd say either RPG or Scrolling since most users seem to want to learn that stuff  smile .

You have to remember that not all Scratchers are that old or fully experienced with the program though  tongue .

Even I have to re-read some of your posts once or twice sometimes XD but usually when trying to help a Scratcher, I take a quick look at their projects and posts to make a guess at how much they already know.

I've always said that I am just a novice programmer but people usually just ignore me when I say this. The average user at real programming forums are better than me. Its just that scratch is so limited that I can do most of what is possible and that most scratch users have 0 prior coding experience so I seem very good in comparison.

Re: What guide/tutorial should I write?

Set Archmage Truth to 1.

Now let's see how modest he is XD.

Archmage, your a good programmer, and I'm guessing you do many other types as well? And If not...*?!!!!???

Anywayz...
A lot of people seem to want a basic battle system, but I think you should make a scroller, as that will teach a lot of people many basic skills. Also, you could just copy and paste what you put in my topic, because so far i've managed to figure it out from that.

Re: What guide/tutorial should I write?

I've done a few other languages including pascal, java, php&sql, html, &AS2/3.

Most of my coding experience is from Actionscript though.

I wrote a simple tutorial for scrolling years ago and it was stikkied until the great sticky cleanup. Since then there have been a spike of scrolling tutorials that all repeat what I wrote. I don't really like how people on scratch emphasize scrolling as an essential technical skill because its just common sense for the most part. Most technical programming concepts ie Inverse Kinematics, 3D, physics, perform too poorly in scratch to be made into anything useful.

Re: What guide/tutorial should I write?

I suggest that you do the Scrolling Platformer. Because (assuming people will learn further than JUST what you say) those are the games people want for the front page.

I say the RPG battle engine, because that seams to be a popular subject for Scratch Games nowadays.
