hey um what's up?

my computer's down, so I'm on a friend's, but I noticed a lot of older topics got locked, that had no reason on why they were locked, did the mods or scratch team go hog wild on locking stuff or something else? what happened?

Which isn't a bad thing, by the way  smile

If a topic hasn't recieved a new post in more than 2 weeks, it closes itself.

Also, similar rules apply to All About Scratch, Advanced Topics, Show and Tell, and New Members, except the rule there is 2 months, I think.

Re: hey um what's up?

wow scratch just keeps getting worse, kinda like facebook

if the topics were deleted after 2 weeks that would make sense because that would clean up unused server data, but locking contains data and has no real reason or point, so what the heck is the point in this!? I don't know what the scratch team is thinking, but they need take some * advice from people, they're really beginning to get on my nerve with their stupid, worthless changes

edit:
just noticed another point, this promotes spamming because people will probably begin to start bumping topics like crazy just to keep them from being locked, even if I just created the idea IDC becausse this NEEDS to be changed, probably the dumbest change yet

Don't worry, you can request that they be re-opened by reporting them. I think the point is that people don't start posting in now-irrelevant topics... I find it quite handy!

Hi dingdong - Please remember to be respectful to everybody in the community.  If you see something that could be improved, we would love to hear it.  But there is no need to be insulting.  As a long-time community member we look to you to help model good behavior for the newer members  smile

The closing of topics was started primarily to reduce necro-posting.  Many new members seem to feel the urge to comb through old posts and comment on anything that catches their interest, regardless of the age of the thread.   By making this process more difficult (the topic would have to be reopened by a Moderator or a new topic created) it was hoped it would cut down on this practice.

With the other recent changes to the forums (the New Scratcher) category, which has restricted posting abilities, we may want to rethink this policy.

Yah. Not to get off topic but I joined that place and quit after about a week because... well... never mind.  lol

Anyways, I think most rules the scratch team carry out are just fine.

We can clearly see that  big_smile

Anyway what's so uberly bad about it? It helps to stop necro-posting and the disscussions can be opened by reporting the first post. There's really no need to cry over split milk.

So I agree with you on one thing - Facebook is getting worse and worse  smile

Edit: Also, My RL friend is the #1 basher of the scratch team. Lucky for all of you he moans to me, not the fourms...

Re: hey um what's up?

I don't know if this is possible, but another forum I sometimes go to (The Spriters Resource forum) makes it so that the default message in the reply box for old threads is a notification saying "You are about to bump an old thread." or something along the lines of that - perhaps that could be implemented here? Alternatively, you could actively encourage people who have something to contribute to old threads to report the thread so it can get unlocked.

Speaking of changes, the 600-second wait time on the New Scratchers seems a bit ridiculous to me, and might discourage some users from using the forums to their full benefits. If you're going to go with a manual approval approach as opposed to automatically bumping them up after 2 weeks, maybe give them 20 or so regular posts, and then automate it so that they're placed in a "Pending Approval" group without posting privileges (or with said 600-second rule or more) until an admin/mod approves them?

Re: hey um what's up?

i'd say 180 seconds, really that's triple the amount of what we have as opposed to ten times
even 300 would be better.

That would make a topic day in less than a day -- hardly anyone will see it!

That seems like a good approach...I like it.  The definition of what is "old" would probably be different for the different forums.

Manual approval probably would require too much moderator time, given the number of people joining the forums each day.  The amount of time between posts is something that could easily be changed if it seems to be overly hard on new members.  We are still studying the situation  smile
