Top Commented.

I was just wondering if there could be a top commented thing on the front page. And why did we remove top downloaded? If it was ever there, that's wut everyone has been saying...

You've all made great points. Good debate, guys  big_smile  Carry on  smile

Re: Top Commented.

I forgot the reason for Top Downloaded. I think it was the same as Top Remixed is today.

Likewise, when a project gets more views(on Top Views for instance) it will get more comments. So the rate is almost proportional.

Re: Top Commented.

Well, I know there definitely wasn't a Top Commented channel before: http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?id=8655.

I'm not so sure I support this idea, either. More comments doesn't necessarily mean a good project, like GreatDane said.

Re: Top Commented.

Comments usually coordinate with views, so I don't think there would be
much of a point of implementing this.

Re: Top Commented.

The creator could just post tons of comments and get on the front page. No fair.

Maybe their comments wouldn't count?

That doesn't necessarily mean I support this idea, see my above post for more details on that  smile

Re: Top Commented.

So the idea is to improve the front page so that it better promotes projects that the community thinks are worthwhile?

assuming "more comments = worthwhile" It's a good idea...

However, I think it's a much bigger problem.  We already have love it's, favorites, tags, and galleries... Those are supposed to help us find projects we may like.  But a very few projects are ever seen.  I think the current system rewards the popular, self-pomoters/spammers, a few others are lucky.
(although it's not horrible, I hope I don't sound too negitive, the current site has served us well, but I think we can do better.) I hope we can think of ways to improve this setup.

That's the goal of FaveTags
although there may be much better ways, I hope that we can start and continue to discuss how others sites do this better, and how we could improve.

Yes, they would frequently coordinate with views, but some people's projects get 50 views and no comments. Plus, more people need the opportunity to get front paged while they still can, and this will give them more chance. For example: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/johnm/974664

Only one comment from each person would work well.

Of course the current site has gave it their all, but I think some people need more chance to get front paged...

I'm not exactly saying it does, but personally I think more people need a chance to get front paged. People always say they've never got front paged on my projects, and I think they deserve it.

Re: Top Commented.

Comments wouldn't really change much... and lots of comments doesn't mean that the project was good; most of the projects would either be controversial or small, like a contest in which you submit your vote by a comment.

Or chatroom projects.  hmm  Yeah, I don't think it would do much.

Re: Top Commented.

It seems to me that it wouldn't be long before people realized that a comment was a vote for the front page...so it would be essentially a duplication of the top loved channel we are currently showing.

If you are looking for more front page exposure...why not just expand top loved and top viewed to two lines a piece?  Probably because the front page would then be pretty crowded  smile

I believe that Scratch 2.0 may allow some kind of filtering of the front page so that you can customize what the front page shows you to better reflect your interests.

I support the Show-Hide expansion thing. Because the problem with top commented is:

Mhm. Only one comment per person would work.
But again, I think we should try out Chris' idea.
