Our aim is (bharvey can be smug about this if he likes) to adopt some of the first class methods used in BYOB (permission granted, credit given). hopefully this will include the ability to treat pictures like everthing else, allowing costumes and maybe whole sprites to be read from files and webpages.

Not smug at all!  Just delighted.  Best will be if you reimplement BYOB so it's blindingly fast and has no bugs.

I'm just envisioning this really tall green C-shaped block with a big text box inside it, into which you type Smalltalk code.  smile

PS  It's starting to look more likely that I won't make it to London unless it's a really quick one-day or two-day thing, which makes the cost of the Chunnel train not seem really worth it.  But stay tuned.

Re: Panther development thread

MathWizz has been a bit quiet lately so I can't say how the java player is going, but it's clear that some of our blocks (including any custom blocks) will not work online.

You could try JSqueak, which is a squeak vm written in java. I haven't been able to put a new image in, not even a copy of the default one, but I'm probably getting something wrong. It might be useful, but the file blocks won't work.

Re: Panther development thread

On some of my custom blocks, I get
<<<This string contains a character (ascii value 127) that is not normally used in code>>>

Can you fix this in 1.1 , if so I can submit a new block.

Re: Panther development thread

I know I'm not supposed to, but I thought I'd see what would happen if I used the default variable blocks, without making a variable.

http://i48.tinypic.com/15875z6.png

Now, here are the blocks I used:

http://i49.tinypic.com/33zbdl5.png

After pressing space, the reporter still reported "0". And the "show variable" block did nothing.

This isn't a problem, due to the fact that you should actually be making the variables in the first place, I'm just pointing out a little genius effort the Panther Team did to variables.  smile

Go Panther!

Oh and thanks for the Panther forums for the sprite size glitch. Using it I was able to fit the entire course on a single sprite instead of 6.

The glitch is when you put the text size on max and type a letter and then move it to the bottom-right of the sprite designer and then you press ok. When you then go to edit the sprite, you can fill in the area made and clear the text for a massive sprite. Also you can repeat to get a uber-collosious sprite.

Hey! I was making a MMOG racing game!

Yes I know, but this will be 90% single player 10% multiplayer, so it not a MMOG.

somewhere up there with "import" and "undo"

It's one of my favorites, I think I forgot to put it in the "new features" section.

nonononoono!

It's possibly a very good thing that you're so enthusiastic!

It IS a good thing  big_smile

Monotony is NOT GOOD.

I only use monotonous when I'm bored or when I'm really really really tired early in the morning.

Althouhg, I do have a friend who sounds very emotionless when he records himself on his minipodcast. It's quite funny actually.

I have a much better radio personality, I think.

Can I confirm something.
If you resize the paint editor, will you be able to import costumes without them resizing?

Re: Panther development thread

To answer your question cds56, We are mainly concentrating on making as many things first class as possible for 1.1 (being able to report costumes, strings and colours all in one block (which means we're doing away with the colour variables and replacing them with first class variables.) There aren't going to be that many new blocks, posssible just a few to handle the new first classyness  tongue  we're also doing some bug fixes  smile

Those of you looking forward to loads of new blocks, we're not adding loads more because of the clutter they would cause, but are taking full advantage of the CYOB feature to give you Blockshop, letting people download, share and request specialised blocks  smile

oh yes, we're also working on resizeable, detatchable and draggable stage and block pallet to provide maximum scripting space and personal preference layout.

oh yes, we're thinking about a menu that lets you check or uncheck a box representing each block so that users can uncheck blocks they never use and hide them, effectively reducing block clutter and we are also thinking about the ability to arrange those blocks to your liking, so you don't always have to scroll down for a block you use frequently. This idea is still in the design stages, but we do hope to include it in 1.1 if we can.

well that's about it that I can think of right now. A little tip for any php and html programmers, while working on Blockshop we've noticed just how much the URL blocks can do as they can search php pages and even trigger php scripts! letting you, for example, create a php counter that goes up by one whenever someone uses your project, letting you keep tabs on your project's popularity. If you have a website, then like us, you can us webpages on the site to store notifications that can be displayed to the user of the project in a window  smile
