I am posting this topic on fear of getting insulted by a bunch of really sensitive scratchers. I am really not trying to be mean in this message so don't get mad at me if you disagree with what I'm saying. Here goes:
We need a freedom of speech on Scratch.
The flagging system is terrible! On other sites like this people just have to DEAL WITH IT!!!! It's not right to censor anybody who posts projects that some people find offensive.
Take the famous rapper Eminem. He got lots of controversy in his career do to his profane, violent, sexist, and homophobic music. (I was mad at some of his lyrical themes BTW) Parents hated him. He was a straight up bad influence.
But the government didn't ban Eminem's music from being listened to or sold. He's got the right to say whatever he wants; he just gets a lot of controversy.
On Scratch what we should do install a filter; if you have the filter off all projects are available to you including flagged projects. But when you have the filter ON, you can only see projects that haven't been flagged.
BUT, some inappropriate projects just don't get flagged. That's just the way it goes. So people with the filter on, still might see inappropriate projects. That's just how it goes. The internet is very big and unpredictable so if something offends you that's just how it goes.

But what if a four-year-old turns off the filter secretly, and sees inappropriate stuff? This site is for kids, so a flagging system is necessary.
Offline
Due to the age this site is directed toward flagging is absolutely necessary.
And inappropriate projects that aren't flagged are normally very new.

But if a four-year old turns off the filter then it's HIS fault. Here on the internet people should be allowed to say whatever they want. Here in America we have a so-called freeedom of speech.

The scratch team made this site and make the rules. Make your own site, O.k?

Yeah, ditto what webgal said.
This site was made for kids. If you've come for swearing and stuff like that, you're on the wrong site.
I third that.

I disagree. On kids' sites, there SHOULD be rules against inappropriate things.

They are all right. Scratch should have a flagging system.
I you have something in your projct that youre worried might offend younger viewers, either don' upload it or put a warning at the beginning. Me and my friend have done that and it seems to have worked fine.

Please flag any project, comment or forum post that does not seem kid-friendly to you. For projects, it doesn't matter if there are warnings posted on it...if it's not kid-friendly, it doesn't belong on the site. Warnings are not considered effective since they can't actually stop a younger member from running the project. I hope that helps make things clear

So, you rather blame a child for he/she's lost of innocence, instead of the real culprit?
Saying that the culprit is the website, of course.
Well, technically it would be the parent's fault for not checking out the website, since the internet is chock full of horribly inappropriate things, but I agree that they need to keep the flagging system to keep the website appropriate for younger scratchers.

then mit can move their server to canada or something.
programming in scratch isn't rocket science. it's made for an introduction to programming. like for young people.

What's that supposed to mean?

Not many people knew how to turn off the filtering system on their internet at the age of 4
We have the freedom to speech our mind. There are just boundries to it. - Read the terms of use for the boundries

On a kids site like Scratch it is very necessary to have a flagging system. Scratch is meant to be a friendly, educational community. Inappropriate content must be flagged as inappropriate if we are going to keep it that way.
If the we decided to throw away all of the rules about language, harassment, and other things now considered inappropriate, then this site could eventually become a unfriendly, swear happy place like many other sites on the internet. Witch is not what most of us want Scratch to be, and is definitely not what the Scratch Team intended Scratch to be. So If you the want them to do away with the flagging system, sorry it isn’t going to happen.
Make your own site and make the rules whatever your heart desires, but you can’t do it here.

The four-year-old could find the switch, wonder what it does, try it out, and BOOM, no more filter.

First of all, what type of person opens Scratch and the first thing they think is I'm going to put a tons of blood and gore and cussing into my project and share it online at a a kid website?

You may not think so, but some people would do that if they could(were allowed to).

My point was, does Scratch look like a program made for that after opening?

no, I mean the computer that hosts the site. I know Canadians can go on scratch.

Scratch isn't for this kinda thing. If a project isn't appropriate for the overall scratch community, it doesn't belong. All projects should be viewable by everyone. I like the sound of this, but what if it becomes an excuse for people to post bad projects? It just doesn't work. And it doesn't stop a some little kid from turning off the filter and seeing bad stuff. This is scratch, not youtube or myspace.

Well, I'm trying to stand up for people who are being censored by the Scratch community. If you don't agree with me, that's okay.
