How NOT to Make A Name For Yourself
OR, How I messed up and how to avoid messing up
Mistake #1 - Announcing Protoman Battle Network
Severity: Fatally Funny
I loved Megaman, and full of enthusiasm, I downloaded DSGAMEMAKER and signed up on the forums. Next, I opened my big, fat mouth. Of course, stupidity loves company, so I also created an announcement on my Protoman Fansite.
"Work has begun, albeit at a slow pace. It would help to have someone on my team who knows what they are doing. I don't.
The storyline is a WIP. "
Now, don't go open your mouth about starting a huge project like that without realizing how much work it'll be. It came back to bite me in the rear end.
Mistake #2 - Releasing Barely Altered Artwork as the Real Thing
Severity: Somewhat Funny
Ho ho ho. Misery loves company. Well... I sorta swiped a file, ran it through a few filters, doodled with crayons and scanned it in. Not funny.
Of course, that garnered a few chuckles. But not enough.
Mistake #3 - Faking Screenshots and cover
Severity: Hardly Humorous
The mockups I came up with were horrible. I promise you. Polka dot backgrounds on the battle screen? What was I thinking? Rotating and mirroring sprites was a really bad idea - the cover mockup turned out horribly.
Mistake #4 - Writing "How NOT to do a project"
Severity: Extreme Mess Up
Thinking I was the wise and mighty sage of n00biness, I went and wrote a post on how not to do a project. It backfired. After reading a few posts, I realized my points were worthless, in the process ticking off a few members. It was actually kinda funny though.
Word of advice: Don't Write on How not to do something.
Mistake #4 - Writing "How NOT To Make A Name For Yourself
Severity: Severely Silly
... Okay, okay. I'll admit this wasn't my best post I've done. An epic FAIL, too. Never, ever, ever write on how not to do something. Especially How NOT To Write About How NOT to Write.
Mistake #5 - Posting A Rant ("Why I hate galleries")
Severity: Bad Enough
Never, ever rant. Or, at least don't rant about things condoned by the team. Ever. That nearly got me banned. LOL.
Guys, you really crack me up. Anything I missed?
PS:
More mess ups coming soon.

Add:
Writing "How Not To Make Name For Yourself" to the list.
Cause your not making one on here.
Plus, DsGameMaker has nothing to do with Scratch.

LOL - you guys are sooooo right! I was planning on adding that to the list, but I ran out of time.
Hmm.... needs a tad more spice for comic effect.

So you basically did all the things a stereotypical newbie coder would do...
1. Plan to make something big when you have no idea what you are doing or even how to start
2. Editing existing material because coming up with original content is too hard
3. Making a pathetic effort to make it look like you have some idea of what you are doing with "awesome screenshots"
4. Make an "educational" post that teaches no one anything

That's about right, Archie!

Archmage, how did you guess? Aha .... I was... er... am... your stereotypical newbie. I seriously had no idea where to start - perhaps I should have studied C for starters.
I've learned a lot from my mistakes - and I began producing original material. Like artwork, for instance. Straight from the drawing board to the internet.
You totally got me there, Arch. And considering you're the guy I look up to, it makes me realize how pathetic and silly I've been acting. A real wake up call.
;-)
So..... how's the writing coming along? Any more mistakes to add to the post?
