This is a wavepad tutorial. Wavepad can be used to crop, edit, and do many other things with sound. Here are download links:

Wavepad has many interesting features, some of which even I do not know how to use, so I will only explain what I know. To open and edit a sound file already on your computer, click on "Open an existing file" in the toolbar on the left. This toolbar, as well as the ones on the top and bottom of your screen, are what allow you to edit your sounds. If you have no sound file already on your computer, or you wish to record a new one, click "create a new file", right above the open an existing file button. Set your file size, larger numbers take up more space but the quality is better, smaller files take less space and have poor quality. Press ok. Make sure your mic is on, and press the record button. Record your sound, and press the stop button (black square). To be able to edit your recording, x out of that small window. It should now appear in the regular background of Wavepad. Now comes the fun part!
Editing your sounds:
To play your sound, press the play button on the bottom toolbar. The rest of the controls are obvious, except for "scrub". From what I see, it is basically a pause. Use the bar on the bottom right corner to control volume. To select a small portion of your sound, click and drag out the blue box, which comes from the yellow bar. To zoom in on your sound, click the magnifying glass with a + on it. to zoom out, click the one with a -. Now this is where it gets interesting. To change the volume of that one section, click the "amplify" button on the top toolbar. It looks like a sine wave. Type your volume in, and press ok. You can loop several songs together by pressing the "mix file" button (fourth from left) on the top, but I recommend inserting silence at that point. To insert silence, find the are you want to insert it by clicking, and press the button 5th from the left on the top toolbar. A good length would be 1-200. Then, add in your sound. If you want to be fancy, add a crossfade from the button close to the middle. You can find out what each button is by mousing over it. You can fade the beginning and end of your sound by pressing the corresponding buttons on the top, and you can even split your sound into 2 separate files. The equalizer is at the top of the screen, and you can normalize, amplify, and remove background noise with the left toolbar, as well as cutting, copying, and pasting a selection.
That's basically it, I explained most features. 2 more features I recommend trying are the echo and reverb functions. The effects are quite interesting.....and the reverse feature is useful for playing sounds backwards (hint: try playing "I am the Walrus" by the Beatles backwards. You can actually hear the much talked-about message with your own ears!) Have fun, and tell me if this post helped you at all! Probably my longest post ever

That is the coolest ever. I'm listening to Nun chuka kata right now backwards

Did it help you at all?

Yes. Because lots of those buttons are confusing, and you explained them pretty good here, to where you get what they do (though from bein a guitar player, I knew about the echo and reverb). And I didn't know about the background noise remover (where it was. You already told me it had it, but not where).

And I am telling my guitar teacher about this next week when I have my lesson.

Cool! The thing I like the most is the fact that such a useful program is entirely free

Here's the ones I know. There in order from favorite to least:
Sonar 7: lot's of money, at least $500.00
Sonar is my favorite because I use it at my lessons, and my guitar teacher has such a great setup
Wavepad: free
I like this because it has some interesting features, like reverse. It also has the some of the same features as Sonar 7
Garageband: free (at least for me)
This isn't the best for recording, but it comes with some awesome loops, and an easy-to-use interface.

lol I have never heard of those others!

One quick update: Wavepad is just a trial, which will last about a month. I forgot to mention that. The actual, regular non-trial software is available for sale though.

I use Audacity, it works fine, echo is one of the effects, but I also like whawha effect
Garageband has those effects (I hate Garageband), but so does my bass amp, but my guitar amp only has distortion...

garageband only allows you to create songs, and it's so hard to do that
Actually, you can import a song into 1 track
