Semi-transparent sprites (NOT ghost effect, only partly)

I say scratch should support semi-transparency. It's really helpful with improving graphics, and you can make professional-looking projects with it.

You don't see how this would be helpful? Here's an example....
http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/8172/explosion2.png

Drag that into scratch. Transparency is replaced by black. Sometimes you want something smoothed on more than one color. One frame per pixel overlapping a color is NOT going to work, right? So why not allow you to use transparent sprites?

And sure what if somebody made a completely transparent sprite? We already have something to fix that, and the sprite will show up as a thumbnail anyway.

Re: Semi-transparent sprites (NOT ghost effect, only partly)

Yep, that's definitely something I want. I think it should have been added at the beginning, but now is better than never!

Think of the projects we could create  yikes  I'm curious, though, how this would affect colour sensing - would the sensing neglect transparency, always considering it a solid colour? Or would it be consider what's behind it as a part of the colour sensing?

That's a brilliant thought. xD

I support! It could definitely help out with graphics quality.

Yeah, let's organize a strike! We won't finish our awesome projects until this is added!

Re: Semi-transparent sprites (NOT ghost effect, only partly)

yeah, an alpha channel on images would be nice.
But if we're already complaining that scratch is slow, this may make it worse.

It would probably need to be scratch 2.0 project, where PNG support is built into flash or html5, or Open GL.  big_smile

Also, we would need a beefier image editor.

As a work around,
- you can blend into your background color, but your background would have to be fairly plain and consistent.
- or you can have other ghost sprite(s), but not for anything fast, as this would definitely slow it down.

Great Idea!  wink  This little effect would make some graphics look way better, and even professional looking.

And also would help anti-alias TONNES of things, making room for that in text, which I've always found looked a little blocky  hmm

Agree. Can we report this so it catches andresmh's attention, or someone else from the ScratchR?

Yeah, let's do that. But the thing is a mod is probably gonna get here first.

Andresmh controls the website, and only does very minimal work on the actualy Scratch program. So he's not the one you'd want to contact.

Re: Semi-transparent sprites (NOT ghost effect, only partly)

If Scratch 2.0 is built with Flash, (which I believe it is) it would likely be easy to have alpha channel images... (many transparency levels.)  But it would need a more powerful image editor... And it raises issues like:
Is a sprite touching even if it touches with almost invisible part of the costume?  (It's easy to accidentally leave behind almost invisible parts when erasing.)

And there's performance/bandwidth issues...

It takes more time to draw alpha channel images, and it adds up fast with projects with many or large sprites, with games that are supposed to run fast. And the files can be much larger.

But yes, I think it would be cool.   big_smile
