I don't think smilies help with determining emotions
I can say "I hate you, you [swear noun] xD/xP/ lol" and the person I said it to would still take offense
And even if it does work, you can easily desguise malicious intent with them
I think the reason I was banned was because I didn't use any smilies when joking and they were taken the wrong way.

The reason I don't think RHY3756547 is joking is because he's harassed us in the past... it was pretty irritating. What do you expect?

What I hate is that every time I make a thread in Miscellaneous, RHY comes and makes me want it closed... like with that thread about posts getting useless.
ANYWAY - it sure didn't seem like a joke, with no smiley and a long history of arguments - I think you've reached prejudice.

There are no body language or voice inflection cues to judge the writers intent...all we have to work with are the words, the word appearances, and any emoticons such as smiley faces or "jk" or other hints. That's why it's worth it sometimes to take a bit more time to review what you are writing and see if it can be misread somehow. Maybe add a few more words to make sure the meaning is clear.[/lecture]
