Forums in notifications

I frequently forget to look in the forums to see if someone replied to something I said, and would find it more convenient if there was setting where if somebody replies to one of your topics, it can be seen in your notifications/messages. You would make it optional, so that people who don't like getting lot of messages don't have to deal with it.

Re: Forums in notifications

Hmm... I think this was turned down because the Scratch Forums are rather separate from the rest of the site...  sad
I'm not sure, though - maybe there's a hope.  smile

Hmph enjoy your fall - I get a lovely spring... without pans of new leaves.

You can already subscribe to an Email Digest...  hmm

Plus, the Forums are seperate from the rest of the site - adding notifications would be tricky to do...

EDIT: Apparently, there was once something like this on Scratch...

Yes!  That feature was available for a while and quite convenient.  But it was putting too much strain on the server so they turned it off.

Quoted from here.

Re: Forums in notifications

Ah come on! If those programmers can make scratch they can make notifications!

It was decided against because it put too much strain on the server - causing things to lag and such - not because it was impossible. They could do it, but the Scratch website would be a lot slower...

And, to add onto what Wolfie1996 said, it would be costly to put up more servers to make the website speedy enough to work - it's about a lack of resources.

Re: Forums in notifications

Yes, forum email notifications more resources.
But notification messages like we have in scratch would not slow down the server as much.

The problem is that the forum is a separate tacked on system.  So it's probably not easy to add forum notifications.  So I (addzero) suggested integrating "forums" into the rest of the site.
http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=389428#p389428  This would be a larger project, probably appropriate for scratchr 2.0

I agree - this would be nice!
I'll push for tighter integration in Scratch 2.0. But there are a lot of factors to consider, so I can't make any promises.

http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=389596#p389596

So perhaps this may happen in the future.
