Scratch Events for Everyone

I could not attend a Scratch Day event yesterday, and nor could many other people. This is a problem. There are not scratch days hosted everywhere in the world, and there never will, but I then thought of how everyone could attend these great scratch events. I think we could have a live stream video of these events, maybe a special online scratch day conference. It would allow everyone in the world that can not attend an event to watch or participate in a Scratch Day event online. This is a pretty open idea, I want all of you to think how we could make this better, and post your ideas. I think we could some how make Scratch Day a memorable day for those who can't visit an event. I really want your suggestions, because there are many ways to go about doing this, and I want to collaboratively put this puzzle together, to see what we can do in the future.

Re: Scratch Events for Everyone

I think it's a great idea - they have this for all sorts of events worldwide. Maybe just a few cameras stationed around MIT that you could watch live would be great.

Exactly. That's a good idea.

Now I just found that on a twitter post there was a link to some live broadcasting. Shouldn't they have announced it on the forums or on the scratch homepage?  mad   hmm  http://twitter.com/scratchteam Was it really live broadcasting?

Re: Scratch Events for Everyone

I watched some of the live broadcasting yesterday - Andres was taking some sort of recording equipment (not sure what) around, and it was broadcasting to here. There are some videos that are still up, and gershmer posted a few videos to Youtube. Andres' videos were pretty interesting to watch live, and I've been listening to gershmer's while on the forums.  smile

I saw the youtube videos already, but I really would have liked to watch some of the live ones. Too bad I didn't check out the twitter post that links to this site you stated above. Thanks again  wink

I'm kind of bummed that I did not get to watch it, I was on scratch all day yesterday. Maybe they will have live broadcasting if they have a Scratch 2.0 discussion day at MIT which was mentioned in the 2.0 Brainstorming video on Youtube. Oh well...

Well, Thanks for the info. Keep suggesting ideas though, because there is so much we could do to make scratch day completely available online for those who can't make it to an event.  wink

Edit: I guess this was 22220th post in the Suggestions forum.  big_smile

Re: Scratch Events for Everyone

No, a VIDEO CONFERENCE! Then you and actually participate. One of your best friends on Scratch , or a volunteer, that is coming can carry the computer around. XD Or, a speech recognition robot carrying the computer around. THAT would be funny.

Me:Robot, go forward until I say.
Robot:Yes.
We are going toward meew0.
Me:Hey, are you meew0?
meew0:AHHHHH! A ROBOT!
Me:? Oh that. I'm doing video conference.  I is happy.
meew0:Okay then...

I was thinking of this too. It's really a great idea, but I don't exactly know how the scratch team would go about doing this, but that does not mean it is totally not possible. You could always have it live, and then have a text box, and what you type goes to the person running the session, but then he/she would be overloaded with questions or suggestions. I really think we could someday participate online completely. It's a problem, but in a community like this, I think it can be fixed. We just need to put a hard puzzle together.

Edit: Also there would have to be special events for those online, because you can't participate in all of the physical events that Scratch Day offers. I also think with scratch 2.0 coming up, collaboration will be a big part of scratch. Maybe these ideas will extend into everyday use of scratch. I really like all the ideas so far, keep coming with ideas!  wink

I suggested something of an online meetup for Scratch Day 2009, for those who couldn't make it - a sort of a video conference. It didn't end up happening then or this year, but I have my hopes that it might happen next year! Here's a link: http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?id=14629 It's a pretty short thread, and users gave some very constructive comments - it's an interesting read.

With scratch 2.0 and the goal of collaboration on the top of the 2.0 list, I think if we can get some ideas going that they might be implemented soon! This is why I brought this up now. It is very important.

More ideas....

I'd like all of you to keep thinking of ideas, this is an important topic that we should consider more.

Absolutely  smile  I'm blank as for more ideas, as I wasted my best ones in that previous comment of mine - so maybe we should reconsider that? An online presentation, where a few minutes would be given to each speaker, etc... (read the thread I linked to above) This is not the definitive answer, but I think I find it quite helpful!

Yes I read that thread and it had some great discussion. This really stuck out to me of what you said.

Here's an idea: pre-record or videotape each "presentation", which could be submitted to the Scratch team for reviewing. Then, the Scratch team could create an all-day sort of "show" streaming (or airing) online with a live comment box below for people to discuss what's going on.

Great Idea. I think video is key in this, and some sort of communication is needed, because part of scratch day is learning about other scrathers, but it would have to be safe enough that won't allow any bad content. Also, like the live coding at MIT, I think we could incorporate some sort of online event too... Think about it, and post your ideas!  wink
