My suggestion - make a closed forum (that everyone can view!) where you move in all the old topics! They're out of Miscellaneous (making it a lot cleaner), and yet the topics still exist, able to be viewed! If someone wants a topic back, the topic can just be moved and reopened...
What do you think?![]()
It would clean up Miscellaneous...but it would just move the clutter to the new forum.
Tangent: Does anybody remember the story "The Cat in the Hat" with the pink stain that ended up just getting moved from object to object?
It seems to me that closing the topic will put it out of sight enough. We can always make another forum later if it seems useful.TheSaint wrote:
I like this. Its better than deletion so we can reference those old threads, and yet I believe that this will stop necroposting. Why not try this in all of the forums, and necroposting isn't just limited to Misc. ?
Good idea! Although I think we should probably move the "close" threshold to topics that hadn't gotten a new post in maybe 2 months.
True. The only ones that I have seen outside Misc. have been from 6 months to a year outdated, and then necroposted. I think at least Show and Tell, New Members and All about Scratch probably are hte ones with the most nerco posting. I am not sure if it is a problem in Troubleshooting, as the forum isn't very active, and by nercoposting it can keep the number of new topics down. I dunno...

personally i think two weeks is a good time; if I don't comment on a forum in two weeks that means i'm finished with it. for others though, that may not be the case, but two months is maybe a little too long. does anyone else agree that one month would probably be sufficient.

Of course.
And fixed your post.

But why not delete the threads instead?![]()
The forums are like a giant archive of information,
If we deleted, a ton of history would be lost! Think about all of the things on your "History of Scratch" thread that would have been lost!
Even though some topics are best left gone, I think closing is a much safer alternative.

I see lots of necroposts in Suggestions as well...
I wouldn't think it would matter much in suggestions, if the idea has yet to be implemented. When suggestions are bumped, it only shows that it is a popular idea.

Seems fine, since I already do a lot of bumping.
what is that any way
That's when you post in a topic that hasn't had any posts in a long time, "bumping" it to the top of the first page.

This is a good way to stop bumping, but personally I think it would be more useful outside of Miscellaneous, just because bumping happens more often in the other forums. Maybe topics that haven't been posted in for a certain amount of time could be automatically closed, and where the quick reply box is it could say something like, "This topic hasn't been posted in for x amount of time, so it has been automatically closed", maybe with a link that says, "request to be reopened". Would that work, or would it be too much?

why not delete it is the owner doesn't report it within two weeks?
It might be the case that owners, for whatever reason, will want to bring back a topic even if it is much older than two weeks. Closing topics will prevent unnecessary necroposting while allowing the thread to be reopened in cases where commenting on old thread is acceptable.

I got an idea! Why don't you make the forums so the owner of a thread can delete it even when it's closed?

I like it...but it would require some work on the forum software, since it doesn't have that feature now. With Scratch 2.0 currently under development, I'm not sure when or if the forum software is likely to get some attention...but I'll put in a request. Good idea
