Re: Panther development thread

The first Panther projects have been submitted and uploaded to the Panther site. This is only a temporary laoding method, as soon as our proper sharing site is up and running, there will be an upload button in Panther that will save me a LOT of work! For the time being, I'm afraid we have a 5mb upload limit for files, which means that Kingdaro's AMAZING beat jam project could not be uploaded  sad  I will be sure to load it onto the new site just as soon as it comes up.

Users may notice that we have a colour coded rosett seal system in place, this allows you to make educated guesses about the projects we have on our site.

here are the two we have agreed on so far, other will follow. The rosetts apply to the user and the project.

green: Means that the user has never released any dangerous projects in the past or that that project has been checked by a member of the Panther team and found nothing that could be even potentially harmful.

black: (user only) this user is a Panther member of the Panther team and can be completely trusted.

Re: Panther development thread

Please read!

Now that people can share their projects on the Panther site, we have included a verification system to stop people impersonating you and uploading dangerous or indecent projects in your name. This requires you to register your email account to your scratch username.

Don't worry guys. we're not gonna spam you or anything, it's just so that we know the project we got really is from you, and stops us getting projects from unknown authors.

what you do:

go to the register page and give us your email address and your scratch username. THE EMAIL IS NOT USED FOR ANY PURPOSE BUT VERIFICATION AND WILL NOT BE REDISTRIBUTED OUTSIDE PANTHER

as soon as I check my email (oh for want of an automated system  tongue ) I will send a message to the scratch acount name listed asking if that person did send us an email to ensure that no one used someone else's name when registering their name.

You reply telling me (hopefully) that you did in fact send that registration request thank you very much.

I add your email to the list of registered people and any emails I get from you with an attatched project will be uploaded to the Panther site.

I send you a confirmation email telling you that you can now send projects.
_________________________________________________________________________

It's probably less work for you than it is for me to process it, and I hope you understand I just want to make sure we don't get impersonators on the site, doing things they shouldn't in your name.

Oh, please do tick the box asking if you'd like update emails. It's nothing big, and you're probably not going to get them often anyway. It's just to keep you in the loop and tell you when bug fixes are done or new versions are released.

Thanks for reading all that.  smile  If you have questions, or can suggest a better method, do let me know, I'm all ears  smile

It's great that we will be able to upload directly to the Panther Site. This will save us a lot of time.  smile

This isn't a very convincing criterion.  If you mean "the user has previously released zillions of project none of which were dangerous" that'd be better.  (I do understand there's a startup problem!)

don't worry, we have plans for new users to have a different colour rosett as default, if they have that colour, it means they have been registered for less than two weeks or have less that 10 projects, whichever comes first.

the message would be something like:

this user is new, please be helpful and friendly towards them, but take some care when watching their projects as this person has not proved themselves reliable yet

.. it needs a lot of work, I know, but I think that something along those lines will help.

we'll also be likely to have special colours for people who have, say, 50 projects that are all green, to indicate they are trustworthy and maybe ones for citizenship if they are very helpful at all times, and ones for winning competitions, though we're trying not to over complicate the colouring, otherwise people will become confused.

Thanks to everyone who has registered so far, I'm glad to see that this idea is working  smile

Yes bharvey, I want that one too, I just have no idea how to do that one. at the moment, I just do <not<contents of file[test.txt] = > (blank)

What if you have been on Scratch for over two weeks or have over ten projects. Would that still count? Or does it only apply to new Panther users?

Re: Panther development thread

I would think it applies to Panther users and projects only, It's still in developmental stages at the moment, and the colour system isn't going to come into full effect until the proper sharing site is up and running. For now, I think black, green and orange will the the only colours (orange being an unchecked project or one that has file blocks, custom blocks or URL blocks in it)

I have to go to a psychology lesson now, expect me back in four hours or so.

Hmm.  (1) Two weeks isn't a very long time.  If I wanted to mess up your computer I'd be willing to wait two weeks. Indeed, I would probably want two weeks' experience before I dared post a project of mine anyway, security issues aside!  (2) The trouble is that you're using the same color for this weak criterion as for the strong(er) criterion of you having read the code, so since I'm going to discount green thingies I don't get the benefit of you reading the code.

Sorry, I don't mean to beat on you, especially during your convalescence from net starvation.  smile   But -- maybe this is a transatlantic cultural difference? -- I expect "green" to mean "really for sure okay."

Sadly, being smart is not a guarantee of being well-intentioned.  (I was thinking of listing well-known examples but don't want to start a political flame war  smile  )  When you have user pages running, you can put decorations on users for reasons like that, but you should keep decorations on projects to mean just safety.  Imho.

PS You should hurry up and get sandboxing working to avoid the need for all this; an unwanted side effect of a big visible security scheme is that it will make people hesitant about Panther altogether.  (I'm thinking about that "my parents won't let me download it" message a few pages back, although those particular parents weren't worried about Panther per se.)

Could we maybe have something like 'pantherprogramming.co.uk'?

Yeah just to confirm what Sperry said, I will be aquiring your domain and it should be with you soon. If you would like any other ones then please tell me as I can get them free with a packagr I have got.

Please note that the web adress will be www.pantherprogramming.co.uk, you will have to put all the www's and the .co.uk. I searched Panther.co.uk but this is taken. Personally I think that pantherprogramming is a bit too long but if you have any other suggestions please tell me.

Thanks!  big_smile

Re: Panther development thread

Hi guys, just quickly signing in in the break  smile

blimey, I can see that our colour systems has some big flaws  hmm

Rossyboyfilm, you've been helping alot lately, It's nice to see so much support for Panther. I like the idea of a .co.uk address, though why do you think we should change sites?

erm... what else... oh yes, I'l hae a look at the page not found problem when I get home, there's also a problem that they're all .sb because they were made before we changed to .pt so I think I'll try to re-upload them with the correct extention.

The more I and others use Panther, the more glitches appear. It seems that we need to address those things soon, and post a major bug fix for them We'll announce it here, on the Panther site and via Panthernews so people will hopefully notice it when it's published.

I'm not here thursday to sunday either  sad , so Sperry will hopefull cover for me and keep the glitch reports coming in  smile
